Notabene is building infrastructure for digital financial services in the crypto/blockchain space. The company has ~50 employees across 14 countries, recently closed Series B funding (November 2025) with investors including Y Combinator, DRW, and Jump Capital, and is preparing for its first external financial statement audit.
You will own Notabene's accounting function as Controller, reporting to the VP of Finance with one direct report. The accounting foundation is already substantially built—close runs, books are in order, and audit readiness work is underway. Your role is to own the process through completion, raise standards on policy and documentation, and drive automation as the business scales.
Key responsibilities include:
**Audit & Compliance**: Run the readiness assessment, build remediation plans, own the auditor relationship, and deliver clean audit opinions for fiscal years ending January 2026 and January 2027 with no material weaknesses.
**Close & Reporting**: Own monthly, quarterly, and annual close across Notabene Inc. (US) and Notabene GmbH (Switzerland). Produce GAAP financial statements, consolidations, intercompany eliminations, and FX translation under ASC 830.
**Technical Accounting**: Write accounting positions and memos. Apply ASC 606 across three revenue models (subscription, usage-based, payments network take rate), ASC 350-40 for software capitalization, ASC 718 for stock compensation, and emerging guidance for stablecoin payment revenue.
**Revenue & Billing Systems**: Own Tabs as the billing and revenue system of record, including contract configuration, usage data integrity, and GL bridge.
**Cost Accounting**: Build payroll allocation methods for cross-functional work and capitalization policy for development, ensuring departmental margins reflect actual effort.
**Controls & Automation**: Design and implement controls over revenue, cash, procure-to-pay, and payroll. Evaluate the accounting stack with bias toward automation, including agentic tooling for categorization, reconciliation, usage validation, and collections.
**Accounting Operations**: Own AR, collections, AP, and payroll accounting with your direct report. Coordinate with external providers (Swiss accountants, outsourced close firm) to ensure Notabene owns the close.
**Tax**: Own US tax compliance (income tax provision, sales tax) and coordinate Swiss compliance with local accountants.
Within one year, success means: clean audit opinions, consistent calendar close, documented revenue recognition, clean multi-entity consolidation and FX translation, written policies for payroll allocation and software capitalization, documented and operating controls, and at least two manual processes automated.
**Requirements**
- Experience as Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager at a venture-backed company, with a track record of raising process standards
- Demonstrated experience taking a company through a first external audit, with specific knowledge of what broke and how you addressed it
- Month-end close ownership across two or more legal entities in different currencies
- Deep, hands-on ASC 606 experience applied to at least one revenue model without clean precedent, defended to auditors
- Detail-oriented: build calendars, perform reconciliations, touch the ledger directly
- Experience developing a small team or managing a single direct report
**Nice to Have**
- Active CPA license
- Usage-based or consumption billing experience (Tabs, Metronome, Maxio, or similar)
- Public accounting or audit background
- ASC 350-40 software development capitalization experience with auditable time capture
- Track record replacing manual accounting work with automation
- Swiss entity experience (CHF functional currency, Swiss statutory/VAT)
- Digital assets, payments, or regulated financial services exposure
