LanceDB is an AI-native multimodal lakehouse platform used by leading AI companies like Runway, Midjourney, and Netflix to manage and process massive datasets for training frontier models, robots, and autonomous systems. As the first Controller, you will build and lead the accounting function from the ground up, establishing the financial infrastructure, processes, and team needed to support the company's next growth phase.
You will own all accounting operations including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, fixed assets, accruals, and general ledger management. You'll lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements and supporting schedules. A key responsibility is owning the financial systems and technology stack—evaluating, implementing, and continuously improving the ERP and related integrations to drive scalability, accuracy, and automation.
You'll manage tax and compliance across corporate income tax, sales/use tax, payroll tax, and federal/state/local requirements in partnership with external advisors. As the company scales toward potential fundraising, audits, and international expansion, you'll establish scalable processes, controls, and reporting infrastructure to support these milestones.
Your role includes serving as a trusted financial partner to the CFO and executive team, translating complex accounting issues into clear business implications and actionable recommendations. You'll build and lead the accounting team, managing hiring, development, and retention while also overseeing the outsourced accounting firm relationship. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring both strategic vision and execution excellence in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Required: 8+ years of progressive accounting experience at high-growth tech/SaaS companies, proven track record building accounting functions and systems from scratch, strong US GAAP foundation, excellent analytical and communication skills, ability to thrive in ambiguous fast-paced settings, team management experience. Nice-to-have: CPA, Series B+ venture-backed experience, ERP implementation experience, revenue recognition expertise for subscription/usage models, investor relations support, remote-first team experience.
