Checkr is a data platform powering safe and fair decisions through AI verification. The company serves over 140,000 customers including Uber, Airbnb, DoorDash, and Anthropic, and is recognized on the Forbes Cloud 100 2025 list and as a Y Combinator 2024 Breakthrough Company.
As Commercial Counsel, you will report to the VP of Commercial & Corporate Legal and serve as a trusted legal advisor to Checkr's revenue organization. You will draft, negotiate, and close complex enterprise-level commercial agreements while advising internal stakeholders on legal, regulatory, and risk considerations. Working closely with Sales, Revenue, and Compliance teams, you'll help the company scale responsibly while maintaining deal velocity.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the review, drafting, and negotiation of diverse commercial agreements (SaaS, licensing, partnerships, data provider agreements)
- Owning deals end-to-end with practical, risk-based guidance aligned to company goals and risk thresholds
- Serving as trusted advisor to Sales and Revenue teams, resolving issues independently and building cross-functional consensus
- Creating and managing commercial templates, playbooks, and internal processes to enable legal team scaling
- Researching and analyzing laws affecting the business, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), from a commercial perspective
- Managing outside counsel on commercial matters and acting as a creative problem-solver
You bring a JD with active California Bar membership, 3+ years of experience structuring and negotiating commercial agreements (ideally in-house at a high-growth tech company), and working knowledge of key legal issues including liability, indemnification, risk allocation, data protection, and privacy. You are a pragmatic strategist who communicates complex legal concepts clearly to non-lawyers and senior stakeholders, manages multiple projects independently in fast-paced environments, and demonstrate strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and bias for action.
