MatX is seeking a world-class CFO to serve as a long-term executive partner to the founders during the company's most critical growth phase. MatX's mission is to make the world's best AI models run as efficiently as allowed by physics. This role combines strategic and operational responsibilities in equal measure. You will build the finance function from the ground up while managing multi-billion-dollar capital allocation, supporting the path to IPO, and collaborating with founders on long-term strategy. Key responsibilities include: Build and Lead the Finance Function: Develop the finance organization from early-stage infrastructure into a world-class function capable of supporting a public company. Oversee and develop the Controller and FinOps teams, establishing robust systems, processes, and internal controls. Establish accounting governance, financial reporting, and audit-readiness aligned with the company's growth trajectory and IPO timeline. Partner with cross-functional leaders to embed financial discipline without creating friction for a fast-moving engineering culture. Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-financial leaders and the board. Strategic Capital Allocation & Fundraising: Manage and optimize deployment of multi-billion-dollar capital across supply chain investments, manufacturing partnerships, and factory production capacity. Lead the Series C fundraise (>$1B target) and manage relationships with institutional investors including Jane Street and major AI-focused VCs. Oversee execution of the company's debt financing strategy, including the existing ~$2B debt-like facility, ensuring supply chain security and manufacturing readiness. Work with founders to develop and execute long-term capital structure strategy aligned with the IPO path. Support customer prepayment arrangements and non-recurring engineering (NRE) revenue structures. Exit Readiness: Drive the business toward exit readiness targeting approximately 2029, including financial infrastructure, governance frameworks, and investor relations capability. Support board and investor reporting requirements. Advise founders on strategic exit considerations if acquisition opportunities arise. Ensure Jane Street and board-level involvement in senior finance hiring and strategic decisions is well managed. Required qualifications: 15+ years of progressive finance experience with a track record of scaling finance functions in high-growth, capital-intensive businesses. Hardware, semiconductor, manufacturing, or deep tech background with genuine understanding of supply chain economics, COGS, and manufacturing financial flows. Proven experience raising very large institutional rounds and managing complex, multi-billion-dollar capital structures. IPO experience either as CFO or senior finance leader. Banking or consulting background viewed positively. Exceptional intelligence and quantitative reasoning. Intellectual honesty, humility, and genuine collaboration. Autonomous and self-directed. Comfortable with ambiguity and pace. Bay Area-based or able to commit to approximately 3 days per week in the Bay Area office.
