Observable Space is a vertically integrated space technology company building precision optics platforms for Earth observation and in-space applications. The company serves NASA, JPL, SpaceX, Boeing, Raytheon, and the US DoD, combining precision opto-mechanical hardware, embedded computing, cloud orchestration, and developer APIs into integrated products for ground stations, on-orbit sensors, free space optical lasercom, and distributed compute platforms. The Business Operations Manager will report to the VP of Operations and build the planning, measurement, and operational systems enabling the company to scale. Current planning and reporting processes are manual and rapidly evolving; this role establishes metrics, planning processes, and systems infrastructure providing leadership visibility and supporting better decision-making. Key responsibilities include: building and maintaining core operational metrics and dashboards (throughput, yield, cycle time, WIP, on-time delivery, labor productivity, inventory, cost per unit); driving continuous improvement by identifying bottlenecks and measuring impact of changes; evaluating major capital investments through financial and operational business cases; conducting ad hoc quantitative analyses on pricing, costs, and market assessments; building forecasting and capacity planning processes across manufacturing and operations; developing long-range operational plans balancing demand, capacity, inventory, and resources; supporting facility expansion evaluations; shaping the operations systems roadmap including ERP and reporting capabilities; maximizing value from Global Shop Solutions while identifying workflow improvements; and partnering closely with Manufacturing, Sourcing, Sales, Managed Services, Finance, and Engineering on cross-functional initiatives. The role requires 5+ years in business operations, manufacturing, strategy, consulting, or related analytical roles, ideally in hardware/manufacturing environments. Required skills include strong quantitative abilities, comfort building models and dashboards from incomplete data, track record of building measurement systems or operational infrastructure from scratch, Excel/Sheets proficiency, and proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority. SQL or other data tooling, ERP/MRP experience (GSS, NetSuite), precision optics/aerospace/defense manufacturing background, and Lean/Six Sigma training are valued. Regular travel to Detroit, MI facility required.
