Brex is seeking a Bill Pay Counsel to serve as an embedded legal partner for its bill pay and payments products. This role combines regulatory expertise with product-focused collaboration, requiring deep knowledge of money transmission, payments, and financial services law.
You will work closely with engineering, design, and product teams from ideation through launch, translating complex regulatory requirements into practical product decisions. Your responsibilities include advising on money transmission requirements, regulatory implications of product architecture and payment flows, and helping teams make sound build-versus-defer decisions. You'll track and analyze US state and federal money transmission laws and relevant international payments regulations to keep Brex ahead of regulatory change.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as embedded legal partner to engineering, design, and product teams, advising in real time
- Provide pragmatic advice on money transmission requirements and best practices for bill pay and payments products
- Advise on regulatory implications of product architecture, payment flows, fund movement, and feature design
- Advise cross-functional partners (compliance, risk, marketing, sales, partnerships) on critical money transmission and payments regulatory questions
- Track and analyze US state and federal money transmission laws and international payments regulations
- Advise on product and marketing collateral, customer communications, and disclosures
- Draft, update, and maintain customer agreements, terms, and disclosures for bill pay and money movement products
- Support licensing, bank partner, and payments-network requirements for product launches
You'll need 4+ years of experience in law firms and/or fintech companies advising on money transmission, payments, and money movement matters. Familiarity with federal, state, and international money transmission and payments laws is essential, including state money transmitter licensing, BSA/AML requirements, EFTA/Regulation E, NACHA operating rules, and required disclosures. You must have a law degree and be admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction.
The role is based in Salt Lake City with a hybrid arrangement requiring a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday), plus up to four weeks per year of fully remote work.
