Brex is seeking a Bill Pay Counsel to serve as the embedded legal partner for its bill pay and payments products. You will be a subject matter expert on money transmission and payments regulation, providing strategic advice on regulatory risk and compliance as Brex scales its bill pay offerings globally.
You will work closely with engineering, design, and product teams from ideation through launch, translating complex regulatory requirements into practical product decisions. Your responsibilities include advising on money transmission requirements and regulatory implications of product architecture, payment flows, and feature design. You'll track and analyze US state and federal money transmission laws, along with relevant international payments regulations, to help Brex stay ahead of regulatory change.
You will also collaborate with cross-functional partners including compliance, risk, marketing, sales, partnerships, and bank/payments-network relationships to find creative solutions to business problems. Additional responsibilities include advising on product and marketing collateral, customer communications, and disclosures; drafting and maintaining customer agreements, terms, and disclosures for bill pay and money movement products; and supporting licensing, bank partner, and payments-network requirements for product launches.
The role requires 4+ years of experience in law firms and fintech companies, with deep familiarity with federal, state, and international money transmission and payments laws. You must be admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. An entrepreneurial mindset, ownership mentality, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment are essential. The position is based in Brex's New York City office with a hybrid arrangement requiring a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday), with up to four weeks per year of fully remote work available.
