Brex is seeking a Bill Pay Counsel to serve as the embedded legal partner for its bill pay and payments product teams. In this role, you will provide strategic legal guidance on money transmission and payments regulation, working closely with engineering, design, and product teams from ideation through launch. You'll translate complex regulatory requirements into practical product decisions, helping the company move fast without compromising compliance.
Key responsibilities include advising on money transmission requirements and regulatory implications of product architecture, payment flows, and feature design. You'll track and analyze US state and federal money transmission laws and relevant international payments regulations to keep Brex ahead of regulatory changes. You'll also advise cross-functional partners (compliance, risk, marketing, sales, partnerships) on critical regulatory questions, draft and maintain customer agreements and disclosures, and support licensing and bank partner requirements for product launches.
You'll need 4+ years of experience in law firms and fintech companies, with deep familiarity with federal, state, and international money transmission and payments laws. Required knowledge includes state money transmitter licensing, BSA/AML requirements, EFTA/Regulation E, NACHA operating rules, and required disclosures. You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, an ownership mentality, and an entrepreneurial mindset suited to fast-paced environments. A law degree and admission to practice in at least one jurisdiction are required.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work arrangement requiring a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday), with up to four weeks per year of fully remote work available.
