As a Backend Engineer, you will join one of three autonomous engineering verticals—Demand, Supply, or Fulfilment—supporting the platform's core product innovations. You'll work in a small, highly collaborative Agile team with end-to-end responsibility for microservices, collaborating across product, design, frontend, and mobile disciplines.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable microservices and features
- Own the quality, resilience, and maintainability of your team's services throughout their lifecycle
- Collaborate closely with product designers, product owners, and engineers across disciplines to deliver product innovations
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and advocate for development best practices
- Fix bugs and refactor code to maintain product reliability and maintainability
- Participate in Technical Week—a dedicated period for experimentation, creativity, and knowledge sharing every two product sprints
The engineering team operates with a focus on high-scale challenges: 75,000 auctions per week, 10+ million monthly visitors. You'll work in a flat structure where every role has broad scope and direct impact on customers and business outcomes.
The role is hybrid, based in Lisbon, requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in the office. Candidates must already be based in Portugal; visa sponsorship and relocation support are not available.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of software development experience with object-oriented programming
- 3+ years of experience working with customer-facing products in e-commerce, fintech, or SaaS
- Experience designing, implementing, and deploying backend services with focus on high availability, low latency, and consistency
- Strong understanding of API design, SQL, and relational databases
- Excellent English communication skills; comfort raising concerns, sharing ideas, and documenting work
- Collaborative mindset with ability to take initiative and help teammates
- Solution-oriented thinking and active problem-solving approach
- Commitment to continuous learning and skill development
- Prior Ruby experience is not required; passion for learning new technologies is valued
