Catawiki is a curated online marketplace for special objects, auctioning over 100,000 unique items weekly across 80+ categories. The company has sold over 25 million objects and serves more than 10 million visitors monthly with 75,000 auctions per week.
As a Backend Engineer, you will join one of three autonomous engineering verticals—Demand, Supply, or Fulfilment—responsible for building and maintaining scalable microservices that power the platform's search and discovery, bidding, curation, logistics, payments, and support systems.
Your responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable microservices and features end-to-end
- Take ownership of service quality, resilience, and maintainability throughout their lifecycle
- Collaborate closely with product designers, product owners, and frontend, backend, and mobile engineers
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and advocate for development best practices
- Fix bugs and refactor code to maintain product reliability
- Participate in Technical Week—a dedicated innovation and knowledge-sharing initiative held after every two product sprints
- Contribute to strengthening the engineering culture through documentation and mentorship
The role operates within small, fully autonomous, highly collaborative Agile teams. You will have end-to-end responsibility for microservices from design through deployment and ongoing improvement. The company values bold thinking, curiosity, openness, initiative, and strong customer focus.
This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in the Amsterdam headquarters. The company currently only considers candidates already based in the Netherlands; visa sponsorship and relocation support are not available.

REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of software development experience with strong object-oriented programming foundations
- 3+ years of experience working with customer-facing products in e-commerce, fintech, or SaaS
- Expertise designing, implementing, and deploying backend services with focus on high availability, low latency, and consistency
- Strong understanding of API design, SQL, and relational databases
- Excellent English communication skills; comfort raising concerns, sharing ideas, and documenting work
- Collaborative mindset with ability to take initiative and support teammates
- Solution-oriented thinking with ability to identify opportunities and explore alternative approaches
- Commitment to continuous learning and skill development
- Prior Ruby experience is not required but passion for learning new technologies is essential
