Joby Advanced Development is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to build the AI data and evaluation platform for the Superpilot™ autonomy stack. This role sits at the intersection of data science, data engineering, and autonomous flight systems, offering a unique opportunity to design and deploy AI solutions across a diverse fleet of autonomous aircraft (conventional, electric, and hydrogen-electric in both CTOL and VTOL configurations).
You will develop data-centric AI solutions to autonomy problems, transforming raw flight telemetry, sensor data, imagery, and synthetic data into reliable AI datasets, metrics, and workflows. Your work will support algorithm development, regression detection, edge-case investigation, and validation of safety-critical behavior before flight operations.
Key responsibilities include:
• AI Data Annotation & Curation: Design and maintain scalable auto-labeling pipelines for heterogeneous aircraft and simulators; build data quality pipelines for curation, filtering, and analysis; develop algorithms for data cataloging, metadata management, and anomaly detection.
• AI Data Evaluation & Analysis: Transform raw flight and simulation data into trustworthy metrics and curated datasets; develop scalable pipelines for algorithm evaluation, analysis, and visualization.
• AI Solutions Development: Design data-centric AI solutions for autonomy problems in perception and decision-making; explore data proactively, develop new metrics, interpret trends, and investigate anomalies; collaborate with the Superpilot™ team on integrated solutions; monitor system health and performance.
You will work in a small, high-impact team that values curiosity, technical initiative, and independent operation. Close collaboration with perception, controls, and flight software engineers is essential. The ideal candidate cares deeply about system design, reliability, developer experience, and enabling fast, safe iteration across multiple aircraft programs.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, or related field
• 8+ years of experience in data science
• Expertise in machine learning model development, evaluation, and deployment
• Expertise in data analytics, dashboards, and visualization
• Experience building dataset management solutions, platforms, and infrastructure
• Strong proficiency in Python and Git within Linux-based environments
• Experience with cloud data and compute (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Proven ability to document complex technical designs, architectural trade-offs, and implementation roadmaps
• Champion of software best practices, including rigorous code reviews and mentorship
• Excellent cross-functional communication skills
• Must qualify as a "US Person" per 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 (US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees)
DESIRED:
• Expert-level software engineering with deep expertise in architecting clean, scalable, maintainable code
• Experience with data engineering infrastructure, platforms, and tools
• Experience processing high-bandwidth sensor data from robotics (cameras, lidar, radar)
• Experience processing aircraft data (GPS, inertial, air data, radio data)
• Experience with MLOps and DevOps for production ML deployment (MLflow, Dagster, Docker, Kubernetes)
