Carrot Fertility is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel, Regulatory to join its Legal team. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on employee benefits and ERISA compliance, serving as the lead legal advisor on these critical practice areas.
Key Responsibilities:
As Lead ERISA & Employee Benefits Attorney, you will provide comprehensive legal guidance on ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA compliance for HRA and other plan designs. You'll negotiate Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) and review HRA, adoption assistance, gestational surrogacy, and other benefit plan documents. You'll provide strategic counsel on new product offerings, state and federal taxation, compliance, privacy, implementation, fiduciary obligations, and state regulations on reproductive care. You'll monitor regulatory developments from the DOL, IRS, and HHS, providing proactive guidance on emerging ERISA compliance obligations.
Beyond your ERISA focus, you'll contribute broadly across the Legal function by collaborating with cross-functional teams including Finance, HR, Product, Sales, Customer Success, and Operations to identify and mitigate legal risk. You'll manage outside counsel relationships for ERISA-related issues, contribute to developing legal department processes, templates, and training programs, and provide legal support on other matters as assigned by the General Counsel.
You'll join a collaborative Legal team that partners closely with stakeholders across the company to navigate a complex and evolving regulatory landscape. The team is responsible for enabling growth while managing risk, with deep expertise across employee benefits, healthcare regulation, privacy, and commercial transactions.
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school with active bar membership in good standing
- 5-8+ years of legal experience with significant focus on ERISA/employee benefits law at a law firm, in-house legal department, or combination
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal employee benefits law (ERISA, Internal Revenue Code, HIPAA, ACA, CAA, COBRA, FMLA)
- Strong understanding of healthcare privacy and data security law (HIPAA and state privacy frameworks)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate complex legal concepts for non-legal stakeholders
- Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment
