Abridge is seeking an Assistant General Counsel for Product to serve as the primary legal advisor for teams building the company's AI and machine learning models, products, and technologies. The role is highly cross-functional, focusing on advising product teams developing ambient clinical documentation, agentic workflows, and multimodal healthcare experiences.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partnering with product and engineering teams to advise on legal issues spanning model development, agentic workflows, multimodal outputs, and clinical deployment
- Identifying and designing practical mitigations for AI-specific legal risks, including model behavior, output accuracy, intellectual property, data provenance, training rights, and liability for AI-generated content
- Developing scalable legal processes, frameworks, and contract language suited to frontier AI development pace rather than relying solely on industry precedent
- Serving as internal expert on AI legal and policy matters, shaping Abridge's positions on emerging AI regulation and representing those positions with external counsel, regulators, and industry groups
- Supporting privacy impact assessments, model risk assessments, and data governance frameworks specific to AI training, fine-tuning, and deployment
- Partnering with legal, product, and compliance stakeholders on AI principles including transparency, accountability, and human oversight
The ideal candidate brings 12+ years of legal experience with at least 6 years counseling on AI, machine learning, or emerging technology products. Prior in-house experience is required. You should demonstrate creativity in navigating novel legal matters, working knowledge of AI-specific legal issues (IP/copyright in AI-generated content, training data rights, model liability, responsible AI), and ability to translate complex regulatory and technical concepts into practical guidance for non-legal audiences. Comfort with ambiguity, tight timelines, and novel legal questions without settled precedent is essential. Prior experience at growth-stage AI or healthcare technology companies and strong understanding of HIPAA and healthcare data privacy regulations as applied to AI systems are bonuses.
