Kraken, one of the world's longest-standing crypto platforms founded in 2011, is seeking an Assistant General Counsel – Commercial (Partnerships) to join its Commercial Legal team. Reporting directly to the Head of Commercial Legal, you will lead commercial legal efforts for Kraken's product partnerships and strategic initiatives.
In this role, you will serve as lead commercial counsel for high-visibility, complex product partnerships, driving legal strategy and execution for first-of-their-kind commercial arrangements. You'll act as a strategic partner to Product, Sales, Engineering, Finance, and Regulatory teams, helping design go-to-market structures and partnership models that are legally sound while supporting rapid innovation.
Key responsibilities include: advising leadership on commercial legal matters and negotiations including technology agreements, strategic partnerships, and terms of service; overseeing development and continuous improvement of legal templates, playbooks, AI processes, and risk management frameworks; collaborating with Compliance, Tax, and Regulatory teams to assess legal risk and implement forward-thinking solutions; supporting contract lifecycle management and driving legal process automation; and assisting with M&A efforts including contract diligence and integration.
You'll need a J.D. or equivalent legal degree with active license to practice law in at least one jurisdiction, plus 8+ years of commercial legal experience ideally combining top-tier law firm and in-house work. You should have a proven track record leading complex, high-stakes commercial transactions in global environments, particularly involving technology, SaaS, or strategic partnerships. Deep understanding of product development and go-to-market strategies from a legal perspective is essential, along with excellent contract drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills. Demonstrated leadership experience including mentoring and managing high-performing teams is required.
Nice-to-haves include experience in fintech, crypto, or highly regulated sectors; familiarity with vendor onboarding and procurement processes; background working with product and engineering teams on consumer-facing and enterprise products; experience with contract lifecycle management tools; and passion for crypto and Web3.
