GrowthX AI is building a platform that unifies marketing workflow—content production, measurement, and optimization—powered by AI. The company serves high-growth companies like Ramp, Lovable, and Strapi, and operates a hybrid revenue model combining subscription platform fees with services revenue.
You will be GrowthX's first Assistant Controller, building the accounting function from the ground up. This is a 0-to-1 role reporting to the Head of Finance. You own the integrity of the books end-to-end: monthly/quarterly/annual close, GAAP-compliant financial reporting, accounts receivable and collections, accounts payable oversight, revenue recognition, systems integration, internal controls, and audit readiness.
Currently, GrowthX uses an outsourced bookkeeping firm and Campfire as the general ledger. Part of your mandate is to bring bookkeeping and close work in-house over time, reducing dependence on external help while building scalable processes and documentation. You'll inherit real problems on day one: aging AR, complex contract structures with opt-out windows, multi-state tax exposure, and systems that don't yet integrate cleanly. You're expected to be hands-on with the actual accounting work, not just reviewing others' output.
Key responsibilities include: directing the outsourced bookkeeping relationship while transitioning work in-house; preparing and analyzing GAAP-compliant financial statements; owning AR/collections including direct customer follow-up; managing AP and vendor workflows; handling complex ASC 606 revenue recognition for both subscription and services revenue; owning core finance systems (Campfire GL, Carta equity, billing/payment stack) and their integration roadmap; building accounting processes, controls, and documentation; reviewing customer and vendor contracts for accounting implications; administering equity (option grants, cap table accuracy); supporting treasury and cash forecasting; coordinating tax and compliance with external advisors; partnering with People Ops on payroll and compensation; preparing monthly reporting for lenders and investors; and building audit-readiness through documentation and controls.
You'll work in a fully remote, async, high-autonomy environment with minimal meetings. The role demands business-partner thinking: you read contracts and operational decisions to anticipate accounting and cash implications before being asked. You're comfortable with ambiguity, self-directed, and can communicate complex accounting judgments clearly to non-finance executives.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Prior experience as a Controller, or as a strong Assistant Controller/Accounting Manager ready to run the function independently, ideally at a high-growth Series A SaaS company
- Demonstrated experience building or materially maturing an accounting function from scratch—you understand what 0-to-1 actually requires: process, controls, and documentation that don't yet exist
- Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue; ability to reason through nonstandard revenue scenarios rather than applying templates
- Comfort owning the close independently without a controller above you catching mistakes
- Business-partner mindset: ability to read customer contracts, compensation changes, and operational decisions to identify accounting and cash implications
- Clear, direct communication skills; ability to explain accounting judgments to non-finance executives in plain language
- Self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity in a remote, async, high-autonomy environment
- AI-forward approach: daily use of AI tools to accelerate close, reconciliations, and reporting; informed perspective on where automation belongs in accounting workflows versus where it doesn't
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with Campfire or comparable modern GL systems (Ramp, Rippling, NetSuite)
- Track record building an accounting function at a startup from the ground up
- Experience with hybrid subscription + services revenue models
- History of insourcing an accounting function previously handled by outsourced firms
- Prior experience navigating a first audit or first institutional financing round
