OpenAI's creative team is seeking an experienced Art Director to join their in-house creative group. The team's mission is to help communicate the work happening at the frontier of AI in a way that feels grounded and human—through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and innovative work that doesn't fit traditional categories.
In this role, you will lead the creative development of marketing campaigns, product launches, and brand moments from concept through final execution. You'll develop and direct compelling visual narratives that bring OpenAI's story and products to life, translating abstract ideas and complex technology into clear, inspiring, and elegant visual communication. You'll collaborate closely with writers, designers, brand strategists, product marketing teams, and external creative partners to produce visually stunning work across channels—from key visuals and web experiences to video storyboards, product trailers, and live event creative.
You'll provide visual direction for campaign photography, illustration, and video work, sometimes hands-on and sometimes through external vendors. A key responsibility is establishing and maintaining a high visual bar across all marketing outputs while ensuring consistency with OpenAI's evolving brand identity. You'll also contribute to the evolution of OpenAI's brand system in ways that are scalable, distinctive, and expressive.
The team values creativity as a collaborative sport, where ideas get better through discussion and building on each other's thinking. The culture emphasizes curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance craft with decisiveness. This role is based in New York with periodic travel to other OpenAI offices.
