OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team is seeking a Senior Applied AI Engineer to serve as a technical thought partner for U.S. government agencies implementing GenAI solutions. You will embed deeply with federal, state, and local government customers to establish GenAI strategies, identify high-value use cases, and guide implementations from prototype to production. In this role, you will act as the primary technical lead for sophisticated public sector customers, working across their technical teams, subject matter experts, systems integrators, and implementation partners. You'll design comprehensive architectures leveraging OpenAI's API and foundational models to solve government operational challenges—including automated content synthesis, advanced search capabilities, and bespoke applications. You will collaborate closely with Sales, Solutions Engineering, Global Affairs, Applied Research, and Product teams to ensure customer success. Key responsibilities include: deeply embedding with customers as their technical advisor; identifying and qualifying GenAI applications aligned with their strategic roadmap; building hands-on prototypes and delivering strategic guidance to accelerate time-to-value; managing relationships with customer and partner leadership; contributing to open-source developer resources; scaling deployment engineering practices through knowledge sharing and best-practice documentation; and providing high-signal feedback to product and research teams. You should bring 7+ years of technical consulting experience with U.S. public sector customers, with proven success leading GenAI or ML implementations for government agencies. You'll need strong understanding of network and cloud architecture, including on-premise deployments; proficiency in Python, Go, or TypeScript; excellent communication skills across technical and business audiences; and the ability to own problems end-to-end while driving multiple concurrent projects. The ideal candidate is a humble, high-throughput operator eager to collaborate and committed to making the team succeed. OpenAI offers relocation support for new employees. The role is based in Washington, DC.
