Fundamental is an AI company founded by DeepMind alumni that has developed NEXUS, a Large Tabular Model purpose-built for enterprise decision-making. The company is backed by top-tier investors and trusted by Fortune 100 companies.
As AI Deployment Strategist, you will own the complete AI strategy for one of Fundamental's most strategic accounts in the oil and gas sector. You serve as the single point of accountability for how NEXUS expands within that enterprise—determining which business problems it solves, which executives sponsor it, how value is measured, and how initial deployments scale into multi-year, multi-business-unit programs.
Unlike a Solutions Architect who owns the technical win, you own the commercial and strategic expansion. You will act as the customer's trusted advisor on applied AI, meeting with senior business leaders to identify where predictive capabilities change P&L decisions, building business cases for new use cases, and orchestrating Fundamental's Solutions Architects, Forward Deployed Engineers, Research, and leadership to execute the roadmap. Account expansion is your primary success metric.
Key responsibilities include: building and maintaining a multi-year NEXUS use-case roadmap prioritized by business value and feasibility; identifying and qualifying new opportunities from initial conversation through business case and commercial agreement; cultivating executive sponsors at VP and C-level, running steering committees and quarterly business reviews; defining business KPIs for each deployment, tracking realized impact, and translating model performance into CFO-actionable language; setting priorities for technical teams and removing organizational blockers across IT, data governance, and business lines; running discovery workshops across functional leaders (production operations, drilling, supply chain, finance, commercial, HSE) to map decision points to prediction problems; bringing field patterns, competitive intelligence, and unmet needs back to Product and Research teams; and codifying the expansion playbook into repeatable frameworks and templates for the wider Applied AI team.
The role is based in Houston, embedded with an anchor customer in oil and gas, requiring regular on-site time and travel to the San Francisco office. You must already speak the language of the energy industry—understanding how operators plan capital, run assets, trade production, and make decisions across upstream, midstream, and corporate functions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or related field (MBA or equivalent preferred)
- 5+ years in oil and gas industry: either strategy consulting (MBB or equivalent) serving energy clients, corporate strategy/operations at an operator or oilfield services company, or strategic account roles selling enterprise technology into oil and gas
- Working knowledge of oil and gas operations: upstream and midstream operations, capital allocation and portfolio planning, production and cost forecasting, commodity markets, and organizational structure of major operators
- Track record of expanding engagements or accounts: turning single projects into broader programs by identifying new problems, building business cases, and securing executive sponsorship and budget
- Executive presence and structured communication: comfortable leading senior leaders, writing crisp recommendations, and defending value models
- Strong commercial and financial acumen: able to build business cases, model ROI, and navigate enterprise procurement and budget cycles
- Technical fluency sufficient to be credible with data and ML teams: understanding prediction problems, required data, and feasibility assessment (coding not required)
- Existing network of senior relationships in Houston's energy ecosystem is a strong plus
- Ownership mentality: measured on account outcomes, not deliverables; energized by ambiguity
- Humble, team-oriented attitude with bias toward action
