Hatch is a sleep wellness company helping 5+ million people build healthier sleep habits through hardware devices and subscription services. The company is at an accounting inflection point with growing hardware-and-subscription revenue, direct and retail sales, and inventory complexity.
You will serve as Accounting Operations Manager, reporting to the Financial Controller. This is a hands-on role owning the day-to-day operating rhythm of the accounting function. You will lead the monthly close process, review journal entries and reconciliations, manage external accounting, payroll, and tax partners, strengthen cash and payroll controls, coordinate recurring tax compliance, support 401(k) administration, and redesign manual processes into scalable workflows.
Within the first month, you will learn Hatch's business model and accounting systems, own payroll and 401(k) governance (including variance review and final approval), build partnerships across Finance, People, Operations, and Supply Chain, and establish a baseline assessment of close timing, manual touchpoints, and high-risk processes.
Within three months, you will lead the monthly close cadence and workpaper standards, own tax compliance coordination (sales/use tax filings, income tax support, R&D credit tracking), strengthen cash and payment controls as an authorized approver, and launch a transformation roadmap prioritizing process automation.
By six months, you will have reduced days to close and manual effort while maintaining accuracy, implemented at least three meaningful automation improvements, established reliable tax operations with clear ownership and documented procedures, improved external-provider performance, and built resilient operations with dependable coverage across critical accounting activities.
This role requires someone who enjoys making complex processes understandable, measurable, and better. Routine payroll processing is handled by a specialist provider; you retain internal governance, review, final approval, and accountability.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience in fast-moving environments with meaningful experience reviewing others' work and leading people, projects, or external teams
- Strong accounting fundamentals: U.S. GAAP, journal entries, balance-sheet reconciliations, month-end close, financial-statement preparation, and internal controls
- Hands-on close leadership: ability to diagnose bottlenecks, raise workpaper quality, prioritize critical-path items, and move a team toward faster, sustainable close
- Payroll governance experience: reviewing and approving payroll, investigating variances and exceptions, overseeing payroll accounting, and partnering with People and payroll specialists. Multi-state payroll and 401(k) administration strongly valued
- Treasury and control judgment: comfortable reviewing payment runs, approving payroll and cash disbursements, and maintaining segregation of duties
- Tax compliance coordination: managing recurring compliance calendars, assembling audit-ready support, working with external tax advisers, and resolving open tax matters. Multi-state sales/use tax, income tax compliance, R&D credits, and payroll tax experience strongly valued
- External-partner leadership: setting clear expectations, reviewing quality, tracking recurring issues, and improving outsourced teams without taking all work back internally
- Process and systems orientation: mapping processes, identifying control points, translating accounting requirements into repeatable workflows, and leading automation testing and implementation
- Clear communication and documentation: explaining complex accounting issues in plain language, creating practical procedures, and working credibly with auditors, vendors, and cross-functional leaders
- Builder mindset: curious, low ego, calm under pressure, motivated by improving the operating system
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field—or equivalent practical experience
- Plus: experience with SaaS/subscriptions, inventory and COGS, direct e-commerce and retail sales, third-party logistics, ASC 606, NetSuite, Bill.com, FloQast, Rippling, Shopify, or Amazon Seller
