Elephant Energy is a certified B Corp building a one-stop platform to help homeowners transition to climate-friendly, electric technologies and move away from fossil fuels. The company is headquartered in Broomfield, CO, with a hybrid work model. You will join as Accounting Manager, reporting to the Head of Finance. Currently, Elephant Energy's accounting is outsourced to an external provider, and the Head of Finance is the only internal finance employee—meaning day-to-day bookkeeping (AP, payroll, transactional work) diverts him from strategic initiatives. This role internalizes accounting operations, freeing the Head of Finance to focus on strategy while giving Elephant Energy tighter control, faster close cycles, and better cross-functional integration. Key Responsibilities: - Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process end-to-end, closing books by the 15th of each month - Prepare, review, and analyze journal entries, financial statements, and supporting schedules for accuracy and GAAP compliance - Manage general ledger accounting and chart of accounts integrity - Build Elephant Energy's in-house accounting function from the ground up—processes, controls, documentation—as work transitions from external to internal - Recommend and lead a detailed overhaul of existing accounting processes and internal controls - Own the day-to-day accounting tech stack (QuickBooks, Ramp) and identify automation opportunities using AI tools (Claude, Coefficient) - Prepare audit-ready financials and manage the year-end audit process - Take ownership of day-to-day AP and payroll processing from the Head of Finance - Partner cross-functionally with Sales Ops, People Ops, and other teams to improve financial visibility - As the accounting function grows, build toward leading and developing an internal accounting team Day-to-Day Activities: - Post journal entries and month-end accruals - Reconcile bank, credit card (Ramp), and balance sheet accounts - Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes - Code and review expenses (COGS and opex) across markets and departments - Prepare supporting schedules and organize audit workpapers - Maintain and troubleshoot QuickBooks/Ramp integration - Use AI tools to streamline recurring reporting and reconciliation - Respond to ad hoc financial data requests Success Metrics: - Monthly close consistently completed by the 15th of the following month - Audit-ready financials delivered by year-end supporting a clean, unqualified audit opinion - Full internal ownership of day-to-day accounting operations - Demonstrated improvement in cross-functional financial visibility validated through feedback from Sales Ops, People Ops, and leadership Note: This is an individual-contributor role initially. People leadership is expected to develop as the accounting function scales. The role does not set overall finance or capital strategy, manage payroll policy, or own FP&A/forward-looking financial modeling—those remain with the Head of Finance. Requirements: - 2–4 years of public accounting experience - 1–2 years of experience at a venture-backed startup - CPA (or actively pursuing) preferred, not required - Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and Ramp, or comparable GL and spend-management tools - Comfort using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Coefficient) to streamline accounting workflows - Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills - Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and month-end close processes - Demonstrated ability to work independently and build processes in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment - Painstaking attention to detail and strong written/verbal communication across all organizational levels - Big plus: experience in the energy industry, especially with utility rebate programs
