OpenAI's Intelligence and Investigations team is seeking an Abuse Investigator specializing in scams and fraud to identify and investigate misuse of OpenAI products. The role focuses on understanding how bad actors attempt to deceive or defraud people and organizations using AI tools, enabling the company to develop data-backed product policies and scaled safety mitigations. In this role, you will investigate potential scams and fraud involving OpenAI products, including complex or coordinated activity, and document clear, defensible findings. You will assess urgent and ambiguous cases, distinguish substantiated abuse from legitimate use, and recommend proportionate responses. You will communicate findings, uncertainty, and recommendations clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners, working with colleagues across the company to improve how OpenAI responds to emerging scams and fraud. You should understand online scams and financial fraud and be able to adapt as tactics and risks evolve. Strong technical and analytical skills are essential, including experience working with complex information and learning new tools. You must make careful judgments from incomplete or conflicting evidence and clearly state the limits of your conclusions. Relevant language or regional expertise is a plus. You will write clear, well-supported reports and explain findings to both technical and nontechnical audiences. Understanding how AI products can be misused and adapting your investigative approach as products and risks change is critical to success. REQUIREMENTS: - At least 5 years investigating online scams, financial fraud, cybercrime, or related forms of online abuse - At least 2 years of experience conducting applied abuse research or improving investigative practices - Strong technical and analytical skills with experience working with complex information - Ability to make careful judgments from incomplete or conflicting evidence - Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and nontechnical audiences - Understanding of how AI products can be misused - Relevant language or regional expertise (preferred)
