Bankjoy, a Y Combinator and Bessemer Venture Partner-backed fintech startup, is seeking a VP of Systems Engineering to lead three critical engineering functions: Release Management, QA, and DevOps. This is a hands-on leadership role at a pivotal growth stage.
You will directly manage Release Management, a QA organization (including a QA Lead and automation engineers), and a DevOps team (including a Senior Platform Architect and DevOps Engineer). You'll also maintain dotted-line relationships with manual QA engineers embedded across engineering value streams, setting quality standards and ensuring consistent practices.
Key responsibilities include:
**Engineering Leadership**: Lead three core functions owning delivery quality, release discipline, and platform reliability. Provide hands-on technical leadership on solution design, architecture decisions, and incident response. Partner with the VP of Engineering on cross-cutting initiatives including AI coding adoption and architectural standards. Participate in senior leadership alongside the COO, VP of Engineering, and product leadership.
**Quality Framework**: Design and implement Bankjoy's engineering quality framework across all value streams. Own a modern multi-platform automation framework covering Angular, Swift, and Kotlin. Define explicit go/no-go release criteria including automated coverage thresholds and defect standards. Develop and coach the QA organization toward automation-first practices. Establish test data management, environment parity standards, and CI/CD quality integration. Build a quality dashboard visible to engineering and leadership.
**Release Quality & Collaboration**: Partner with the Release Manager on structured release gate processes with mid-cycle readiness reviews and formal go/no-go decisions. Work closely with Technical Support to close feedback loops between production issues and engineering prioritization. Own post-release retrospectives for client-impacting releases. Partner with product leadership on scope freeze discipline and QA involvement in sprint planning.
**DevOps & Platform Reliability**: Lead DevOps strategy owning CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, and platform reliability. Drive platform observability ensuring real-time visibility into system health, deployment frequency, and MTTR. Oversee Site Reliability Engineering practices. Ensure infrastructure meets security, compliance, and uptime standards for regulated financial institution clients.
**AI-Driven Culture**: Champion AI-assisted coding and testing adoption across teams. Embed AI productivity into engineering performance criteria. Ensure AI tools are used in QA including test generation and automated test maintenance.
You bring 10+ years of engineering experience with at least 4 years in engineering leadership managing QA, DevOps, or platform reliability teams. You have deep background in quality engineering with hands-on experience building or rebuilding automation frameworks in multi-platform environments (web and native mobile, iOS and Android). You've successfully driven cultural shifts from manual-heavy to automation-first quality practices and understand what it takes to deliver reliable, compliant software to regulated financial institutions.
