Cambium is an AI-powered platform modernizing the wood economy through logistics optimization, chain-of-custody tracking, fintech and merchant services, inventory management, and hardware-software integration. As VP of Engineering, you will own the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap across this complex, multi-domain stack—some in production, much still greenfield.
You'll lead the engineering team and partner closely with the CEO and Senior Director of Product to translate business strategy into technical execution. Your responsibilities include architecting scalable, modular, cloud-based infrastructure spanning hardware-software integration, merchant services, and real-time inventory management; setting and enforcing engineering standards around code quality, security, and reliability; and applying AI/ML tooling with intention to enhance platform capabilities without compromising resilience.
This is a player-coach role. You'll roll up your sleeves early, bring discipline to scale, and operate with conviction—pushing back on product when needed and bridging business requirements with engineering reality for non-technical stakeholders. You'll also shape the engineering team to fit the platform's future direction, building a culture centered on ownership, craft, and learning.
Required: 15+ years leading engineering teams at scale, with Series B or growth-stage experience. Deep expertise in complex software architecture (logistics, fintech, hardware-software integration, customer-facing platforms), modular architecture, API design, cloud infrastructure, and security. Proven ability to move through ambiguity, mentor and scale teams, and actively evaluate AI/ML tooling for real workflow integration. Bachelor's in CS or Engineering preferred; master's a plus.
Reports to the CEO. Hybrid, 3 days/week in San Francisco. Immediate start.
