Clair is building a digital banking platform that enables workers to get paid as soon as they clock out, rather than waiting two weeks for a paycheck. The company embeds its products within scheduling, workforce management, and payroll apps that workers already use daily.
You will serve as a foundational UX researcher, responsible for building and evolving Clair's user research practice from the ground up. This is a hybrid role based in New York City (three days per week in office: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays), though remote candidates based in North America are also considered.
Key Responsibilities:
Build Clair's User Research Foundation: Establish research processes, tools, and approaches. Develop strategic understanding of users, their needs, and key opportunities. Create a research roadmap balancing foundational learning with immediate product needs. Build scalable recruiting and user engagement processes. Establish centralized systems for capturing, synthesizing, and sharing customer insights across the organization.
Conduct Research: Plan and execute qualitative and quantitative research across the product lifecycle, including user interviews, usability testing, concept testing, prototype validation, surveys, and diary studies. Test early-stage ideas before significant investment. Work directly with Design to iterate quickly on prototypes. Select appropriate methodologies for each research question rather than defaulting to the same approach.
Partner with Product and Design: Collaborate closely with Product Managers and Designers to identify critical customer questions. Shape product strategy through deep understanding of user needs, behaviors, motivations, and pain points. Partner throughout the design process from concepts through post-launch learning. Provide feedback on researchability and usability. Help teams translate "what are users saying?" into "what should we do about it?"
Turn Insights into Action: Synthesize complex findings into clear, actionable recommendations. Tell compelling stories that explain not just what users do, but why. Identify patterns across projects to surface broader opportunities. Communicate findings to influence product decisions and drive action.
Success Metrics (90 days): Deep understanding of Clair's products and users; strong stakeholder relationships; evaluation of current customer insights approach; high-priority research supporting active initiatives; clear perspective on research impact; foundation for scalable research practice; research roadmap.
Success Metrics (6-12 months): Established, trusted research function; repeatable recruiting and engagement processes; validated concepts and prototypes before investment; clear process for sharing and operationalizing insights; trusted strategic partnership with Product and Design leadership; measurable impact on product decisions and outcomes.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in User Research, UX Research, Product Research, or related discipline
- Experience in fast-paced technology companies or startups
- Experience conducting research across full product development lifecycle (discovery through post-launch evaluation)
- Strong qualitative research skills: user interviews, usability testing, concept testing
- Strong quantitative research skills: survey design, data analysis, scalable research methods
- Product design fluency and hands-on Figma experience for testing concepts and prototypes
- Demonstrated ability to partner closely with Product Managers and Designers
- Proven ability to turn research findings into clear recommendations that influence decisions
- Comfortable building processes and operating in ambiguity
- Strong communication and storytelling skills
- Strongly preferred: Experience with financial products, fintech, banking, financial services, or products involving users' money and sensitive financial decision-making
