Stand is building a next-generation property insurance platform that combines advanced physics, AI, and human underwriting judgment to model catastrophic risk at the asset level and automate underwriting decisions. The company is reimagining high-net-worth personal lines insurance for a market where climate risk is escalating, client expectations are rising, and legacy carriers are retreating.
In this role, you will execute Stand's underwriting strategy for a high-net-worth personal lines book, including complex homes, unique exposures, and catastrophe-exposed risks. You'll work directly with brokers, marketing, mitigation, and engineering teams to evaluate risks others won't touch, structure creative terms, and deliver an experience that differentiates Stand in the market.
Key responsibilities include:
- Becoming the go-to underwriter for brokers with challenging, CAT-exposed properties and non-standard liability exposures, developing creative, solution-oriented approaches that balance client needs with sound risk selection.
- Growing your assigned book to premium and policy targets while maintaining strict risk quality standards, demonstrating improved selection through thoughtful terms, appropriate pricing, and disciplined risk decisions.
- Reducing quote-to-bind time on complex risks through decisive communication and clear workflows, earning top-tier broker satisfaction by being more responsive and easier to work with than competing carriers.
- Adopting and helping refine Stand's underwriting tools and platforms, identifying repeatable tasks that should be systematized so you can focus on judgment-based decisions, and continuously pushing for process improvements.
You'll have real autonomy over your book, make decisive calls on complex submissions, and help shape how Stand leverages technology to enhance underwriting craft without losing the human judgment that matters. This is hands-on underwriting with ownership and accountability.
Requirements:
- 3+ years of underwriting experience in personal lines, preferably high-net-worth or complex property risks
- Strong understanding of risk analysis, property & liability coverages, pricing, and compliance
- Track record of managing a profitable book while delivering excellent broker service
- Ability to negotiate quote terms with internal and external stakeholders while building strong, collaborative relationships
- Efficient and effective desk management
- Proficiency in leveraging technology, with ability to quickly adapt to new platforms and tools, and identify opportunities for process improvement
- Property & Casualty License / Excess and Surplus License (required)
- CPCU or similar designation preferred (or in progress)
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; Stand does not sponsor new work visas but can consider TN, O-1A, or H-1B transfers with 3+ years remaining
Not a fit if your experience is primarily in commercial lines or high-volume personal lines with limited exposure to complex/HNW/CAT risks, if you rely on frequent escalation rather than ownership, or if you're not interested in helping systematize work and improve underwriting processes.
