Firestorm is a VC-backed defense technology company pioneering mission-adaptable aerial vehicles (UAS) to democratize defense capabilities for U.S. ally nations. The company is disrupting traditional defense procurement by delivering cutting-edge autonomous and remotely piloted systems at a fraction of conventional costs. As a UAS Test Pilot (RPIC/EP), you will be a senior individual contributor on the Flight Test Team, responsible for piloting fixed-wing Group 1-3 UAVs throughout their lifecycle—from initial build validation and autonomous testing through field deployment and customer demonstrations. You'll serve as a critical operator and technical subject matter expert, directly shaping how the company's modular UAVs perform in real-world conditions. Key responsibilities include: piloting UAVs for developmental testing and live demonstrations; conducting Functional Check Flights (FCF) on newly assembled aircraft; supporting flight test event planning, logistics, and scheduling; training and evaluating Remote Pilots in Command (RPICs) and Safety Pilots; developing and maintaining training materials, flight manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); verifying aircraft configuration and managing flight-critical component inventory; coordinating with test ranges and regulatory bodies for compliance and FAA approvals; executing test campaigns on sub-scale and full-scale platforms; collecting and analyzing test data to provide actionable feedback to engineering teams; collaborating cross-functionally with autonomy, software, hardware, and manufacturing teams; and continuously identifying process improvements in safety, logistics, and test execution. Required qualifications: minimum 5 years piloting fixed-wing Group 1-3 UAS (including autonomous systems); 2+ years RPIC experience; FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate; U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain DoD security clearance (ITAR compliance); familiarity with flight documentation (checklists, test cards, post-flight reports); strong technical writing and communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Preferred qualifications include 7+ years UAS piloting experience, Bachelor's degree in Engineering, defense/military flight test environment experience, UAS simulation tools knowledge, hands-on UAS hardware/avionics expertise, robotics programming (Python, C++), FAA Class III Medical Certificate, and startup/high-growth environment background. The role is based in San Diego with required on-site presence. Travel up to 20% domestically for flight testing and customer support. Physical requirements include lifting up to 30 lbs, wearing PPE, and working in outdoor environments under various weather conditions. Valid driver's license required.
