Firestorm is seeking an experienced UAS Test Pilot (Emergency Pilot) to join the Flight Test Team in San Diego. This is a hands-on individual contributor role supporting the full lifecycle of unmanned aerial vehicles, from build validation and flight testing to field deployment and customer demonstrations.
You will pilot fixed-wing UAVs, perform safety pilot duties, conduct functional check flights, and ensure aircraft readiness through pre-flight validation and configuration checks. Working closely with Flight Test Engineers and cross-functional teams, you'll support flight test planning and execution while maintaining fleet readiness and operational reliability.
Key responsibilities include: piloting autonomous and remotely piloted fixed-wing systems; performing safety pilot duties during test and evaluation; ensuring FAA and internal safety compliance; coordinating with test ranges and stakeholders; collecting and documenting flight data and observations; maintaining accurate flight operations and maintenance records; supporting pilot and operator training; and identifying opportunities to improve safety and operational execution.
You'll also manage logistics for demonstrations, deployments, and field exercises, track aircraft status and maintenance needs, perform basic troubleshooting, and respond to dynamic operational needs to ensure mission success.
Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent hands-on experience; minimum 5 years piloting fixed-wing Group 1-3 UAS (autonomous and/or remotely piloted); FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate; U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain DoD security clearance; experience as RPIC and/or Safety Pilot; familiarity with flight documentation; hands-on UAS/RC aircraft building or maintenance experience; strong understanding of flight operations and safety procedures; cross-functional collaboration skills; excellent technical communication and writing abilities; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred: 7+ years UAS piloting experience; defense or military flight test environment experience; UAS simulation tools knowledge; FAA Part 91 and military airspace regulation familiarity; startup or high-growth company background.
Role is based in San Diego with on-site presence required. Travel up to 30% domestically for flight testing and field operations. Must lift up to 30 lbs, wear PPE as required, and have a valid driver's license with clean driving record. Work includes outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
