General Matter is a venture-backed nuclear fuel enrichment company designing and operating the world's lowest-cost uranium enrichment services in the US. The company is restoring America's ability to produce nuclear fuel for advanced reactors, AI, and critical industries. Backed by Founders Fund and over a dozen top venture capital firms, General Matter is building a lean, world-class team with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency. As Total Rewards Manager, you will build and own the company's compensation and benefits infrastructure from the ground up. You'll develop compensation philosophy and strategy, design benefits programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage the total rewards technology stack. This is a strategic, hands-on role with true ownership of a critical function in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Key responsibilities include: **Compensation:** Own market benchmarking for specialized roles with thin survey coverage; build and maintain compensation bands and leveling alignment; conduct ongoing compensation analysis including internal equity reviews and offer modeling; run compensation review cycles; partner with Talent Acquisition and Finance on offers and budgeting. **Benefits:** Own medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and wellness programs end-to-end; lead annual benefits renewals with broker and carrier relationship management; source and implement new benefits vendors; build and manage the benefits budget; plan and execute open enrollment. **Compliance & Governance:** Own pay transparency compliance across California and all states where the company hires; maintain ERISA, ACA, COBRA, and HIPAA compliance; handle compensation and employee data with strict confidentiality. **Systems & Tooling:** Administer and optimize the Total Rewards stack (Rippling, Carta, Pave); use AI to build tools such as compensation calculators, offer modeling tools, and leadership dashboards; write clear documentation on compensation philosophy and practices. You'll work across engineering, nuclear operations, infrastructure, construction, security, legal, finance, and people functions. The role requires solving novel problems without off-the-shelf answers—such as benchmarking roles that barely exist elsewhere and designing a unified rewards system for both first-principles engineers and plant operators working around the clock. **Requirements:** - 5+ years of Total Rewards experience with hands-on depth in both compensation and benefits - Proven experience running benefits renewals, sourcing and implementing new vendors, and building/managing benefits budgets - Hands-on experience with market benchmarking, compensation analysis, and compensation review cycles - Working knowledge of pay transparency laws, including California's requirements - Fluency with modern HR and compensation tools (Rippling, Carta, Pave) - Experience using AI tools to build models, automations, or internal tools for compensation work - Strong analytical and Excel/Sheets modeling skills with ability to turn data into clear recommendations - Exemplary record of handling highly confidential information with discretion - Evidence of exceptional ability, such as rewards programs built, models/tools created, or novel problems solved **Preferred Experience:** - Administering equity and stock option programs (grants, refreshes, vesting, cap table coordination in Carta) - Designing compensation and benefits for hourly or shift-based workforces (manufacturing, plant operations, field technicians), including shift differentials and premium pay - Designing benefits and compensation for multiple states - High-growth startup experience, especially as an early or first Total Rewards hire - Experience in nuclear, energy, aerospace/defense, advanced manufacturing, or other regulated industrial environments Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
