Salary: USD 114,000 - 142,000 / annual
Archer Technologies is an aerospace company building all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed to carry four passengers with minimal noise. As a Tooling Design Engineer, you will play a critical role in translating aircraft designs into manufacturable reality.
You will work closely with airframe design and manufacturing engineers to provide manufacturing and assembly input during initial design stages. Your primary responsibilities include designing tooling for trim, drill, and assembly operations, as well as manufacturing aids to support day-to-day production. This encompasses conceptualization, material selection, vendor sourcing, and final inspection.
Key technical deliverables include creating CAD files and drawings for assembly fixtures using 3D CAD software (NX preferred) with proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T). You will design, set up, and dimensionally inspect assembly fixturing to support locating and bonding/fastening of large, complex primary structures using laser trackers and dimensional inspection equipment.
You will create design review presentations and analysis reports to communicate and substantiate tooling designs. A core aspect of the role is suggesting and incorporating design changes to improve manufacturability, error-proofing, ergonomic handling, efficiency, and production outcomes.
The role requires interfacing with manufacturing engineers, design engineers, engineering management, operations, shop floor personnel, and external vendors. You will bring hands-on experience with fabrication and assembly, demonstrated through past work or student team/internship projects. You must have previous experience manufacturing and assembling full vehicles with exposure to integration efforts, and a demonstrated ability to problem-solve in prototype environments.
Required qualifications include a minimum of 7 years of professional industry experience, a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent), and deep understanding of composite part design, material properties, allowables, and testing. Proficiency with solid modeling and surfacing in 3D CAD software and GD&T is essential.
Bonus qualifications include experience programming and handling laser trackers, ability to operate composites-related equipment and 3D printers, experience with Fibersim or Composite Workbench, and passion for aviation and eVTOLs.
