OpenAI's Search research team is building systems that help AI systems find, retrieve, and use information from the world, serving over a billion ChatGPT users. This Technical Program Manager role leads a broad portfolio of research and engineering programs powering search capabilities.
You will partner closely with researchers, engineers, and product leaders to translate ambitious goals into clear execution plans, resolve dependencies, and move complex technical work forward. The role combines technical depth, product judgment, and hands-on execution across retrieval, indexing, and model improvements, while collaborating with policy, legal, and external data partners.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading programs across model training, retrieval, large-scale indexing, and search infrastructure
- Translating evolving goals into prioritized workstreams with clear owners, milestones, dependencies, and resource needs
- Partnering with research, engineering, and product leads to define requirements and make tradeoffs across scope, quality, performance, timelines, and cost
- Establishing program success metrics and using them to guide priorities and track improvements in coverage, answer quality, responsiveness, and trust
- Identifying technical and cross-functional risks early, driving blockers to resolution, and communicating progress clearly to teams and leadership
- Coordinating with product, policy, legal, and external partners on data access, use, and presentation
- Managing dependencies with data providers and building repeatable processes for research and engineering execution
Ideal candidates have substantial technical experience delivering complex programs across multiple engineering teams and large technical stacks. Direct experience with search, information retrieval, indexing, or similar complex systems is especially valuable. You should understand technical architectures and tradeoffs, communicate effectively with engineers and researchers, bring clarity to ambiguous research problems, and adapt plans as teams learn while maintaining ownership and momentum. You combine product judgment with program discipline, are resourceful and hands-on, and build trust across functions.
