TRM Labs is an AI-powered intelligence platform helping public and private sector agencies investigate and disrupt crime by tracing illicit activity and building threat network intelligence. The Data Product team builds highly scalable features powering TRM's core products and services.
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Data Product team, you will design and architect mission-critical data services that analyze blockchain transaction activity at petabyte scale. You'll work on features that integrate with dozens of blockchains and build data models supporting sub-second latency queries.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and build highly scalable features integrating with multiple blockchains
- Architect intricate data models optimizing storage and retrieval for sub-second query latency on blockchain data
- Collaborate across data scientists, backend engineers, and product managers to design novel data models enhancing TRM's products
- Partner with product managers, data scientists, and customer-facing teams to understand user needs and translate them into scalable data solutions
- Drive scoping and execution of OKRs/projects impacting multiple teams
- Set team vision and technical roadmaps for one or more products
- Mentor the entire engineering organization and serve as a role model
- Ensure system health and quality through operational reviews, testing strategies, and monitoring rigor
- Write clear design docs, proactively share tradeoffs, and build alignment across disciplines
TRM operates as a distributed-first company with hubs across multiple continents. The team values trust, transparency, and adaptability. The work environment is fast-paced and high-ownership; TRM moves with urgency and expects clarity, follow-through, and impact. The company emphasizes AI fluency as a baseline expectation—you should be in the top 10% of operators in your function in applying AI to accelerate workflows, structure problems, improve quality, and increase speed.

- Exceptional programming skills in Python; adeptness in SQL or SparkSQL
- In-depth experience with data stores such as BigQuery and Postgres
- Proven track record owning 0–1 systems: building pipelines, data platforms, or ML/BI workflows from scratch (not just maintaining legacy)
- Ability to simplify complexity and communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Cost-conscious design mindset: performance, scale, and efficiency
- Experience mentoring engineers or analysts
- Proficiency in data pipeline and workflow orchestration tools like Airflow and DBT
- Expertise in data processing technologies and streaming workflows including Dataflow, Spark, Kafka, and Flink
- Competence deploying and monitoring infrastructure in public cloud platforms using Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, and Datadog
- Proven ability loading, querying, and transforming extensive datasets
- Bonus: Experience with LLMs or AI-powered workflows (prompt engineering, internal tooling, semantic search)
