Salary: USD 144,000 - 192,000 / annual
Sourcegraph is hiring a Tech Lead for the Code Plane team, a critical group building products that enable developers and AI agents to take action on code at scale across massive codebases. The Code Plane team owns Batch Changes (large-scale cross-repo code modifications), Agentic Batch Changes (frontier agent for coordinated code changes), Code Monitors and Code Insights (signals and observability over code), and the src CLI tool (command-line interface for automation).
In this role, you will be the technical leader and visionary for the Code Plane product area. You'll set technical direction, make architecture and tradeoff decisions, drive the roadmap from conception to shipped product, and keep the team unblocked and moving. You'll work hands-on on the team's hardest technical problems while also mentoring and guiding engineers to grow. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Customer Engineering, and adjacent teams to translate customer pain into shipped features.
Within the first month, you'll build relationships across the team, familiarize yourself with all product surfaces by using them as both a user and an agent would, and join the on-call rotation. Within three months, you'll own meaningful slices of Agentic Batch Changes end-to-end, become the technical lead for the team's roadmap, strengthen team practices around design and testing, and mentor teammates. Within six months, you'll be the recognized technical visionary for Code Plane across the company, deeply understand what customers and the agent ecosystem need, and be setting the roadmap direction with conviction.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape developer tools for the agentic era of coding. The role requires someone who is a generalist by choice, comfortable working across backend (Go, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes), frontend (TypeScript, React, SvelteKit), and AI/agent surfaces. You'll be building products that agents and humans use together, and you need hands-on experience with that ecosystem.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Fluency across the stack: Go, TypeScript, SvelteKit and React, GraphQL APIs, PostgreSQL, Docker and Kubernetes in multi-service environments
- Strong technical background with ability to provide guidance on architecture, code quality, and tradeoffs
- Proven experience on teams building end-user product features, ideally developer tools, agent/AI products, CLIs, or technical product surfaces
- Experience partnering closely with Product and Design to take features from idea to shipped and incorporating customer feedback into roadmap
- Must have built something that agents or other programs call (not just used an agent to build something): MCP servers, agent SDKs, tool surfaces, harnesses, or CLIs designed for non-human callers
- Hands-on experience using and reasoning about coding agents (Amp, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) with strong opinions about human-agent workflows
- Async-first communication skills and experience working in globally distributed remote teams
STRONGLY PREFERRED:
- Experience orchestrating autonomous work at scale with machinery that handles failures gracefully, manages costs, and controls blast radius
- Experience owning a service you didn't build with paying customers on an inherited schema, making it better without a rewrite
- Track record of raising the bar for other engineers (testing standards, code review practices, AI assistant workflows)
- Comfortable making architectural decisions where no established pattern exists and revising them when evidence turns
- Ability to define what good looks like for systems with no single correct answer, build measurements to prove it, and hold that standard as conditions change
- Experience sitting with customers, listening past symptoms, and coming back with technical bets the team can build
- Experience as a Team or Tech Lead on a software engineering team
