Volta is building a vertically integrated AI infrastructure platform with a mission to make compute as reliable and available as electricity. The company is backed by a $10B strategic partnership with a leading frontier AI lab, Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz, and a $5B AI Infrastructure Fund. With 100+ employees across London, Palo Alto, and New York, Volta is scaling rapidly. As Team Lead for Platform Engineering, you will lead one of Volta's capability teams responsible for a defined part of the infrastructure stack—compute, storage, control plane and API layer, confidential computing, networking, or the customer-facing surface. This is a hands-on leadership role where you set technical direction, own delivery accountability, and manage the people on your team while staying close enough to the code to tackle hard problems yourself. Key responsibilities include: leading platform engineering team delivery with technical direction and design reviews; setting technical direction for your team's stack area; translating product requirements into scoped technical work and communicating trade-offs; surfacing operational pain points from bring-up teams and turning them into scalable features; collaborating with security engineering on platform-layer security; coordinating with other platform leads on shared architecture and cross-team initiatives; owning reliability, observability, security, and interface standards; staying hands-on with complex or high-risk engineering work; running post-mortems and closing structural gaps after incidents; and managing the team through 1:1s, performance conversations, hiring, and onboarding. You bring 5+ years in cloud platform or infrastructure engineering with at least 2 years leading an engineering team. You have strong backend or systems programming experience in production environments (Python, Go, Rust, or similar compiled/object-oriented languages). You have deep Kubernetes knowledge including cluster operations, CNI networking, scheduling, and workload management. You have GPU infrastructure experience with provisioning, resource allocation, and platform/API exposure. You understand networking fundamentals (L2/L3, VLANs, overlay networks, multi-tenant isolation). You can design and operate production-grade control-plane services and APIs with clean interfaces and breaking-change practices. You have security awareness around trust boundaries, least privilege, and secure defaults. You have proven people management skills and can communicate technical complexity to product and leadership stakeholders. Nice-to-have skills include fluency with AI-assisted development and agent-assisted workflows; familiarity with confidential computing (TEEs, AMD SEV, Intel TDX, Confidential Containers); experience building SaaS/PaaS on IaaS; RDMA/InfiniBand/RoCE networking experience; distributed team experience across time zones; and exposure to serverless or inference serving infrastructure.
