OpenAI's Hardware organization is seeking a Systems Software Engineer to lead the bringup and validation of AI-native silicon and integrated systems. This role bridges silicon design, firmware, platform, and workload teams to bring new hardware from first power-on through production-ready deployment running frontier models. You will own the end-to-end software bringup strategy, defining how software exercises and validates compute, memory, interconnect, and I/O subsystems. Key responsibilities include: - Developing comprehensive software-driven test coverage across hardware subsystems and their system-level interactions - Building diagnostics, test automation, telemetry, and regression infrastructure to accelerate learning and issue isolation - Leading bringup from silicon arrival through board integration, docking, runtime enablement, and model execution - Designing stress tests to characterize reliability, performance, and stability across workloads and operating conditions - Translating architecture specifications and performance models into measurable acceptance criteria and pass/fail signals - Debugging complex hardware-software failures and driving root-cause analysis across multiple disciplines - Validating integrated systems deliver expected functionality and performance - Creating reusable infrastructure and processes for future hardware generations Ideal candidates bring strong systems programming experience (C, C++, Rust, Python), proven track record bringing up complex silicon or hardware-software systems, deep understanding of computer architecture and subsystem behavior, and expertise in low-level debugging across firmware, drivers, and OS layers. You should excel at creating rigorous test strategies, building scalable automation and observability, and communicating clearly across technical disciplines to drive high-stakes work from planning through closure.
