Blue River Technology, a John Deere subsidiary, is building autonomous heavy construction machinery to address a critical labor shortage in the construction industry. The company develops machines that navigate, perceive, and operate in unstructured environments—dirt, dust, steep grades, and dynamic site conditions that challenge conventional autonomy stacks. You will serve as Senior Systems Engineer for the autonomous construction initiative, owning the full systems engineering lifecycle from early development through field deployment. This is a highly cross-functional role bridging hardware, software, machine learning, and functional safety. Key responsibilities include: - Eliciting, defining, and maintaining system and subsystem-level requirements across hardware, software, and ML components - Establishing and managing rigorous requirements traceability matrices connecting operational concepts to component specs and test cases - Designing, documenting, and executing comprehensive verification and validation (V&V) plans for simulated and physical field-testing environments - Developing custom simulation tools and validation frameworks to analyze vehicle performance, edge-case behaviors, and safety boundaries - Contributing to FMEAs, FTAs, and Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments (HARA) to ensure robust system safety - Serving as a critical technical bridge translating complex concepts between ML researchers, embedded software engineers, hardware designers, and safety managers The role requires 5+ years of post-academic systems engineering experience on sophisticated, safety-critical systems. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Robotics, Aerospace, Computer Science, or related engineering discipline is required. Experience with autonomous systems, functional safety standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508), requirements management tools, and simulation/modeling is highly valued. This is a full-time, remote position in the United States with visa sponsorship available.
