OpenTeams, founded by Travis Oliphant (creator of NumPy and SciPy), is building AI infrastructure that enterprises and governments can own, control, and govern themselves. The company is staffed by deep open-source ecosystem contributors from NumPy, SciPy, PyTorch, and Jupyter. We are hiring a Systems Engineer to join our platform support team. This role is designed for someone early in their infrastructure career who wants real ownership of production systems and is willing to earn it through reliability and accountability. The work spans two complementary streams: **Internal Platforms:** You own the systems OpenTeams itself runs on—identity, cloud infrastructure, internal applications, and our website. You are the first responder when something breaks and the person who fixes the underlying cause to prevent recurrence. Responsibilities include triaging the internal request queue, administering Google Workspace and identity systems (accounts, groups, SSO, security policy, onboarding/offboarding), provisioning and maintaining AWS infrastructure (accounts, IAM, networking, tagging, cost visibility), deploying and operating internal applications on Kubernetes using Helm and ArgoCD under senior guidance, maintaining the internal website (Astro site backed by EmDash) including build pipelines and DNS, building monitoring and alerting, and handling security and access hygiene (patching, MFA, access reviews, endpoint configuration). **Project Support:** You handle incoming issues from customer teams—reproducing problems, gathering logs and context, resolving issues covered by existing procedures, and handing off cleanly when escalation is needed. You execute established deployment and maintenance runbooks against customer environments and flag unclear, brittle, or missing steps. You track issues to closure, assist with hardening and compliance work (applying hardened configurations, gathering control evidence, maintaining documentation), and grow into environment builds and platform ownership as your context deepens. You carry learnings bidirectionally between customer platforms and internal systems. Both streams reinforce each other: OpenTeams' internal systems run on the same open-source building blocks shipped to customers, so operating internal environments teaches you to be useful on customer deployments. You will not be an expert on day one, and that is expected. The role values curiosity, documentation, and asking before breaking things. You will participate in incident response and postmortems, and collaborate with a fully remote, distributed team using asynchronous communication. **Requirements:** - 1–3 years of combined experience in IT support, systems administration, or infrastructure work - Comfortable in Linux and on the command line: filesystems, permissions, processes, logs, systemd, package management, SSH - Working understanding of networking fundamentals—DNS, DHCP, HTTP/TLS, VPNs, firewalls—enough to reason about connectivity issues - Scripting ability in Python and/or Bash to automate repetitive tasks - Comfortable with Git and pull request workflows - Hands-on exposure to at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and to containers - Experience administering SaaS tools (Google Workspace, Slack, or similar) including user lifecycle and permissions - Strong written communication skills; most work happens in tickets, pull requests, and documentation - Genuine service orientation toward teammates filing support requests - Willingness to say "I don't know yet, here's how I'm going to find out" - U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance **Preferred Qualifications:** - Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases - Hands-on Kubernetes experience (kubectl, Helm, troubleshooting pod issues) - Exposure to GitOps tooling (ArgoCD, Flux) or CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) - Infrastructure-as-code experience (OpenTofu, Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible) - Familiarity with identity and SSO standards (Keycloak, OIDC, SAML) - Experience with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) - Frontend or static site experience, particularly Astro, or headless CMS work - Familiarity with Python data science ecosystem or JupyterHub - Security+ or comparable certification, or security fundamentals coursework - Exposure to regulated or government environments (RMF, NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, restricted-network deployment) - Open source contributions of any size
