Agave is building the financial operations platform for construction, a $12T global industry. Fresh off a $15M Series A led by Accel (total funding $20M+), the company is experiencing hockey-stick growth with 550+ customers and backing from Y Combinator and construction tech leaders like Procore and Autodesk.
You'll join as a Senior Full-Stack/Backend Engineer to own major subsystems and architectural decisions. The role involves designing and building new large-scale systems, setting patterns for the engineering team, and scoping multi-week projects end-to-end. You'll mentor junior engineers and raise the team's technical bar through design reviews and pairing.
Key technical challenges include:
**AI & Agents**: Building agents that read, reconcile, and act on construction financial data (invoices, change orders, pay apps, budgets) inside legacy systems never designed for modern querying. The hard parts are grounding (ensuring accuracy against actual customer numbers), evaluating quality when the correct answer lives in 30-year-old ERPs, designing tools over APIs, and deciding what should be deterministic pipelines versus model-driven.
**Unification**: Unifying dozens-to-hundreds of fragmented systems under a single standard (data objects, models, authentication, account-linking, filters, pagination). This foundation supports AI products and requires generic design across every system supported.
**On-Prem Integration**: Connecting with legacy on-prem systems (SQL-based, DLL-based, API-based) built 20-40 years ago. Providing secure, fast, reliable interfaces as if they're modern cloud products, including real-time communication and webhooks via web-sockets.
**Scale & Speed**: Handling millions of API requests daily with elegant caching layers. Shipping code daily and iterating based on customer feedback.
Tech stack: TypeScript, React, Redis, Postgres, AWS CDK, EC2.
The company is small, scrappy, and high-caliber. You'll work directly with customers, have outsized ownership, and a front-row seat to building from the ground up. The founding team has 12+ years of history together, including exits (Graphiq acquired by Amazon in 2017) and Amazon experience. Most team members relocated to SF specifically to build Agave.
In-person expectation: 5 days/week in San Francisco office (101 New Montgomery Street, near Salesforce Park). Remote-optional for candidates outside the Bay Area, with sizable relocation bonus offered.
**REQUIREMENTS**
- 6+ years of back-end/full-stack engineering experience
- Designed and built new large-scale systems from scratch, owned them through years of production use
- Deep experience with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS) and distributed systems in production: caching, queuing, data consistency at scale
- Debugged hard production issues end-to-end: DB performance, memory, concurrency, third-party API failures
- Comfortable across full stack; able to pick up unfamiliar or legacy systems (SQL, DLLs)
- Lived through scaling pain: 100x traffic growth, migrations, incident postmortems
- Delivered large, ambiguous projects end-to-end; can explain tradeoffs to founders and customers, not just engineers
- Self-motivated, high ownership, low ego; desire to work on fast-paced, intense, fun team
- Excited to be their next hire; passion for building world-class engineering culture
- If in Bay Area: pumped to work in-person in SF 5 days/week
- No prior experience with their tech stack required
