Overland AI, founded in 2022 and headquartered in Seattle, is transforming land operations for modern defense through autonomous ground vehicles and command-and-control systems. The company leverages advanced research in robotics and machine learning, backed by eight-figure DoD contracts and partnerships with DARPA, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command.
You will own system safety for autonomous ground vehicles across the full lifecycle, from concept and requirements through integration, test, and field operations. Working within the Systems, Safety, and Test Engineering (SST) team, you will maintain an independent view of risk while collaborating closely with engineering teams. Your work produces hazard analyses, safety requirements, and verification evidence supporting MIL-STD-882E safety programs, ATEC safety releases, and customer certifications across multiple parallel programs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, FMEA, FTA) per MIL-STD-882E, scaled to system maturity
- Analyze autonomy and software-controlled behaviors, ensuring software safety controls are captured, traced, and verified
- Define safety requirements and flow them into system and subsystem requirements
- Partner with internal teams to drive safety features to implementation
- Maintain hazard tracking and the system safety case with full traceability from hazard to mitigation to verification evidence
- Partner with test teams on safety test objectives and acceptance criteria; participate in lab, vehicle, and field testing
- Evaluate verification evidence and support readiness reviews, safety releases, and risk acceptance decisions
- Prepare safety documentation for ATEC, government, and commercial reviewers; communicate risk clearly to leadership and external stakeholders
- Help build safety processes that scale across programs and raise safety maturity across engineering
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline
- Hands-on system safety engineering experience on complex systems (autonomy, robotics, vehicles, aerospace, defense, or similar)
- Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882E or related standards such as JSSSEH, UL 4600, ISO 26262, and ISO 21448
- Experience producing safety artifacts for external review (e.g., Safety Assessment Reports)
- Sound, independent engineering judgment on risk
- Comfort in a fast-moving environment with real hardware and field testing
Desired qualifications:
- Experience supporting ATEC or other DoD test and certification authorities
- Experience with autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or semi-autonomous systems
- Experience with developmental and operational test readiness
- Familiarity with MBSE/SysML (e.g., Cameo), GSN safety cases, requirements tools (Jama, DOORS), and Jira
