Oura is seeking a Supplier Development Engineer specializing in brittle materials (ceramics, sapphire crystal, glass) to drive manufacturing and process solutions for next-generation hardware products. You will partner with industrial designers, quality engineers, and material engineers to optimize component design and manufacturing across cost, cosmetics, reliability, and fracture resistance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Define best-in-class processes for ceramic, sapphire crystal, glass, and other brittle components meeting Oura's design and operational requirements
- Partner with cross-functional teams to optimize brittle-material component design and manufacturing
- Use data-driven approaches (Cpk, GD&T, strength/fracture testing) to drive process decisions and influence product design
- Drive global suppliers to establish and optimize manufacturing processes including ceramic injection molding (CIM), sintering, precision CNC grinding, lapping/polishing, edge chamfering, laser cutting/drilling, and coating adhesion
- Lead Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews and set acceptance criteria specific to brittle materials (chip/crack defects, edge integrity, cosmetic standards)
- Develop and document processes, parameters, consumables, and secondary-operation requirements
- Provide on-site leadership during development and production ramp, resolving brittle-material-specific issues (cracking, chipping, warpage, thermal shock failures)
Required qualifications: 4+ years in mechanical manufacturing as a Supplier Development Engineer, Supply Base Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or equivalent, with 2+ years focused on brittle materials. Experience driving global suppliers through NPI to mass production with brittle-material DFM expertise. Hands-on knowledge of ceramic, sapphire crystal, and glass manufacturing processes, failure analysis, DOE, and dimensional capability analysis. Understanding of brittle fracture mechanics and relevant testing methods. Ability to travel internationally up to 15%. Strong problem-solving and cross-functional communication skills. Experience with ceramics, sapphire crystal, or glass on cosmetic or health wearable devices strongly preferred.
