Salary: USD 102,000 - 125,000 / annual
Element Biosciences is seeking a Manufacturing Supervisor to lead a reagent manufacturing team on the second shift (2pm–10:30pm PST, Monday–Friday) at their San Diego headquarters. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Manager of Reagent Manufacturing.
You will lead a team of full-time and contractor technicians responsible for production execution across the entire Reagent Manufacturing value stream. Your responsibilities include:
**People Leadership & Team Management:**
- Serve as a servant leader who removes roadblocks, motivates the team, and supports professional development
- Partner with HR and management on hiring, performance, promotion, and termination decisions
- Execute the approved hiring plan and manage contractor hiring
- Own the team's training program, including on-time completion of training assignments, on-the-job training (OJT), and remedial training
- Provide tactical coaching and development of team members; support a diverse workforce
**Production & Operations:**
- Direct manufacturing leads and team members to ensure day-to-day production goals and schedule commitments are met
- Establish production schedules and priorities with manager oversight; ensure efficient and optimized execution
- Hold accountability for shift KPIs and the team's completion of the daily production schedule
- Ensure adherence to the Employee Handbook, company policies, environmental health and safety requirements, and safe work practices across formulating, filling, and kitting operations
**Process Improvement & Collaboration:**
- Contribute to technology transfer and new product introduction as the voice of Manufacturing; lead successful pilot/development runs
- Partner with Process Engineering and support groups on troubleshooting and continuous improvement
- Focus on resource management, impact analysis, and improvements to safety, quality, efficiency, and throughput
- Collaborate with the Quality team to maintain adherence to quality systems, procedures, operating standards, and compliance requirements
- Contribute to ECO/DCO/NCR documentation; author selected technical documentation and own area-specific work instructions/batch records/SOPs
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related discipline preferred, with 2+ years of relevant manufacturing/engineering experience in life sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or diagnostic manufacturing. Equivalent combination of high school diploma plus progressive experience may be considered.
- Prior experience leading or supervising manufacturing personnel is required.
- Relevant experience in the life science industry is preferred.
- Knowledge of ISO 13485 is preferred.
- Advanced understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies; Green Belt training preferred.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills; able to lead shift start-up/Tier I meetings.
- Proficiency in people skills with emotional intelligence; ability to collaborate effectively and deliver constructive feedback.
- Demonstrated competency in critical thinking and problem solving, including outside-the-box thinking.
- Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and manufacturing/workplace systems such as Jira, Confluence, 42Q, Arena, NetSuite, ERP, QMS, or similar platforms.
- Understanding of key manufacturing processes and technical elements, including basic DNA and sequencing principles, sufficient to enable troubleshooting and feedback on minor ECOs/DCOs.
- Ability to perform descriptive data analysis using basic and intermediate statistical techniques and apply insights to root-cause analysis and process improvement.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing finance and ISO 13485 requirements.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, technically challenging environment with strong ownership and autonomous execution.
- Strong inclination toward continuous improvement, talent development, and building a collaborative, high-performing team.
**Physical Requirements:**
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Position requires physical activity and handling of chemicals; must follow safety protocols and be familiar with personal protective equipment (PPE) in a laboratory environment.
