SpaceXSI's Safety team protects free expression while ensuring users can safely engage with X and Grok products. Child Safety is the highest-stakes area, identifying, investigating, and removing child sexual exploitation (CSE) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across platforms, including AI-generated content, and making legally required reports to NCMEC.
As Supervisor of Child Safety Operations, you will lead the Austin-based Child Safety analyst team across shifts. This is a hands-on management role where you own the quality and defensibility of every high-risk decision, coordinate with Safety leadership, Legal, and law enforcement response teams on high-profile cases, and guide the team's transition from scaled manual review to analysts focused on automation-first appeals, model evaluations, audits, investigations, and escalations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the Austin-based Child Safety team (including senior analysts) covering X and Grok with consistent standards across morning and night shifts and strict adherence to SLAs
- Acting as the escalation layer for complex, urgent, and high-profile cases, including high-profile accounts and law enforcement escalations
- Owning NCMEC reporting decisions, ensuring every report, suspension, and action is accurate, well-documented, and meets legal obligations
- Bringing thoughtful recommendations to leadership on escalations, balancing minor protection with free speech principles
- Coordinating with Safety leadership, Legal, Engineering, and Policy on high-profile cases with Head of Safety visibility
- Running the team's response to viral incidents and emerging abuse trends, organizing sweeps and escalating patterns quickly
- Taking an automation-first approach, partnering with Program Leads to calibrate classifiers and Grok enforcement
- Leading operational model evaluations, audits, and labeling work for CSE to improve Grok's detection capabilities
- Using SQL, Python, or LLM-powered agents to analyze operational data, identify trends, and drive data-informed improvements
- Owning dashboards and KPIs to track backlog and escalation queues hour-to-hour
- Maintaining shift handovers, process documentation, and knowledge checks
- Providing coaching, mentorship, and professional development to foster critical thinking, efficiency, and wellbeing in a team exposed to highly sensitive content
- Running strong feedback loops as a proactive manager
- Building the team into child safety subject matter experts with a defensibility mindset
- Owning team performance end-to-end: setting expectations, measuring performance, rewarding strong performers, and addressing underperformance
- Partnering with internal stakeholders (HR, workforce management, Legal, Policy, other Safety teams) to align on Child Safety objectives
This is a fully onsite role in Austin, TX, requiring coverage across shifts (either Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday). The role may involve exposure to sensitive or graphic content, including vulgar language, violent threats, pornography, and other graphic images.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience in online child safety, Trust & Safety operations, criminal investigations, or a closely related field, including 2+ years leading or supervising a team
- Proven expertise in identifying, investigating, and preventing CSAM and CSE, including grooming behaviors and risks in AI-generated content, with strong knowledge of legal obligations (such as NCMEC reporting) and industry standards for protecting minors
- Skilled in crisis and escalation management, with the ability to make sound, defensible decisions under pressure and navigate ambiguity in time-sensitive, high-impact situations
- Able to apply SpaceXSI safety policies with judgment, weighing the protection of minors against free expression in the global public square
- Proficient in data analysis with hands-on experience using LLMs, SQL, or Python to extract insights, identify emerging abuse vectors, and optimize operational performance
- Passionate about AI and automation, with an interest in leveraging technology to improve Child Safety enforcement and reduce manual workloads
- Strong communicator who can articulate business needs, write clear escalation summaries, and build relationships with Legal, Policy, Engineering, and leadership
- Active X and Grok user with a deep understanding of the platform's role as a global public square and its Safety challenges
- Lifelong learner who reflects on gaps, strives to fill them, and is curious about continuous improvement
- Team player who places the interests of the team first and balances mission accomplishment with compassion for people
- Able to work onsite in Austin, TX, support coverage across shifts as needed, and travel occasionally to collaborate with global teams
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Experience managing Child Safety or Trust & Safety teams at a social media or generative AI company, leveraging AI or other automation tools
- Experience collaborating with child safety organizations (such as NCMEC) and law enforcement, and using specialized detection tools or developing classifiers for CSAM/CSE
- Expertise in leading red-teaming and adversarial testing of Large Language Models to proactively identify novel abuse vectors, jailbreaks, and safety failure modes, with proven ability to translate findings into concrete improvements for enforcement systems, team processes, and platform robustness
- Experience providing human oversight and insights for scaled agentic AI operations, with abilities in prompting and evaluating LLM agents
