Salary: USD 150,000 - 180,000 / annual
Plug is an automotive fintech startup building a marketplace for used electric vehicles. Founded in 2023 by former Tesla executives and backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, the company has facilitated $150M in EV sales and is building an AI-native team in Los Angeles.
As Strategy Manager in the Office of the CEO, you will own the CEO's most important analytical and strategic work. This is an analytical role first—not an administrative Chief of Staff or PMO function. You'll take loosely defined, high-impact problems and deliver structured analysis, clear recommendations, and execution plans.
Key responsibilities include:
• Business Analysis & Recommendations: Own the CEO's hardest analytical questions around marketplace liquidity, unit economics, pricing, growth, and customer behavior. Form hypotheses, pressure-test data yourself, and land on recommendations with clear tradeoffs.
• CEO Strategic Projects: Lead high-priority, cross-functional projects end to end—from problem definition through decision to execution. Own marketplace economics questions, new market evaluations, board discussions, and strategic tradeoffs.
• New Opportunities & Business Cases: Size markets and evaluate new products, segments, and partnerships. Build financial models and business cases to determine whether opportunities are worth pursuing.
• Market & Competitive Intelligence: Track EV, automotive retail, and fintech dynamics. Distill competitive and market insights into actionable implications for Plug.
• Board & Investor Materials: Own the analysis and narrative behind board decks, investor updates, and fundraising materials. Gather cross-company inputs and synthesize them into clear, defensible stories.
• AI-Native Execution: Use AI aggressively for research, analysis, synthesis, drafting, and workflow automation. Continuously ask how to do things faster and better.
• Decision Execution: Turn CEO and leadership decisions into clear owners and next steps. Keep the handful of priorities that matter most moving forward.
• Process Improvement: Identify friction in decision-making and execution. Replace slow, manual, repetitive workflows with data-driven, AI-enabled, or simply better approaches.
Success after 12 months means you've led several CEO-sponsored projects from question to decision to execution (with at least one materially changing a Plug decision on pricing, market entry, or resource allocation), own the analytical backbone of board and investor materials, have surfaced at least one unsolicited problem or opportunity, replaced at least one slow workflow with a faster one, and are the go-to person for the CEO's most important, ambiguous work.
The role reports directly to the Founder & CEO and requires five days per week in-office in Sawtelle, Los Angeles. Expect frequent evening and weekend work, particularly around board meetings, fundraising, and high-priority projects. This is a fast-paced role that tracks the CEO's pace.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 3 to 6 years in a role where your analysis drove real decisions: management consulting, investment banking, PE/VC, strategic finance, corporate strategy, founder's associate, or high-ownership analytical role at a startup
• Structured problem solving: ability to take ambiguous questions, break them into pieces, identify what information matters, and reach conclusions
• Business judgment: form a point of view rather than presenting options; make recommendations with incomplete information
• Comfort with data: interrogate numbers, use BI tools, recognize when something doesn't make sense (data scientist skills not required)
• Excellent written communication: turn messy information into concise memos and clear CEO- or board-level presentations
• Strong Excel modeling skills
• High ownership: don't wait for detailed instructions
• Constructive challenge: comfortable working directly with senior executives and pushing back when data supports it
• Follow-through: do unglamorous work required to get things across the finish line
• Real AI usage: point to specific ways AI has changed how you research, model, or write
NICE TO HAVE:
• Experience at early-stage or high-growth technology companies
• Marketplace, automotive, fintech, mobility, or consumer technology experience
• Experience preparing board, investor, or fundraising materials
• Market sizing and competitive analysis
• SQL
