Airbnb's Talent Systems team within BizTech is seeking a Staff Workday Integration Engineer to serve as the technical authority for enterprise HR integrations and AI-enabled tooling. This is a hands-on builder role where you will define integration strategy, set architectural standards, and personally own the engineering of complex Workday integrations and agentic systems that power HR processes for thousands of employees globally.
You will own the full integration lifecycle: architecting Workday integration standards and governance frameworks; designing and building complex inbound/outbound integrations using Workday Studio, Core Connectors, EIBs, Document Transforms, and RaaS APIs; managing high-volume scenarios including payroll runs, benefits enrollment, and multi-country rollouts; and engineering Airbnb's Workday MCP server and AI assistant plugins that enable employees and managers to act on HR data directly from their existing tools.
Key responsibilities include defining integration architecture and technical strategy; developing core Workday integrations covering Web Services (WSDL, SOAP, REST), payroll interfaces (PECI, PICOF), Custom Reports, and Workday Extend applications; owning the agentic integration layer with OAuth 2.0 authorization, human-in-the-loop controls, and audit logging; driving production reliability and security across 300+ integrations; maintaining HR and payroll process fluency; and mentoring engineers through design reviews and documented standards.
You will work alongside a Systems Architect who owns business process architecture and functional design, partnering closely with Employee Experience, Recruiting, Payroll, Legal, Privacy, IT Security, and external vendors. You will think 12+ months ahead, proactively surface systemic gaps, establish patterns adopted team-wide, and represent Talent Systems in enterprise architecture forums and vendor discussions.
The role demands both strategic thinking and hands-on technical depth: you will personally write integration logic, own production reliability, make architectural decisions, and ensure compliance across multiple jurisdictions (GDPR, SOC 2, SOX). You will manage the integration portfolio through Workday's semi-annual release cycles, assess release notes, lead sandbox testing, and deploy to production with rigorous change controls.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 9+ years of enterprise technology, software development, or systems integration experience
- 5–6 years of hands-on Workday integration development covering full lifecycle: requirements, design, build, testing, go-live, and post-production support
- Workday Integration Proficiency (personally written code required):
- Workday Studio: complex multi-step integrations, sub-integrations, custom error handling and fault frameworks, XSLT transformations
- Core Connectors and EIBs: worker data integrations
- Workday Web Services (WWS): WSDL interpretation, web service versioning, SOAP and REST request/response handling
- Payroll interfaces (PECI, PICOF) and third-party payroll provider integration
- Custom Reports and Calculated Fields
- Business Process Framework understanding
- Workday Extend: data models, business logic, UI pages, REST APIs
- Workday Orchestrate for multi-system workflow coordination
- Strong working understanding of core HR and payroll processes (hire-to-retire, compensation cycles, benefits enrollment, time and absence, compliance reporting)
- Experience with enterprise integration patterns, error handling, retry frameworks, and observability standards
- Security and compliance expertise: PII handling, audit controls, data reconciliation, GDPR, SOC 2, SOX
- Authentication and transport security: OAuth 2.0, SAML, secure file transfer (PGP, SFTP)
- Technical leadership and mentoring experience
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to cross-functional stakeholders at all levels
