Coframe is building adaptive, evolving, and personalized user and agent interfaces. The company is revenue-generating, rapidly growing, and backed by Khosla Ventures, Nat Friedman (founder of Android), and others. The team is small, talent-dense, and includes competitive programmers, former founders, and AI researchers from top institutions.
As a Backend System Architect, you will help build the systems powering Coframe's platform. This is a high-ownership role for someone who enjoys solving ambiguous technical problems, designing systems from the ground up, and shipping reliable production software quickly. You'll work across backend infrastructure, data systems, APIs, and AI-powered workflows.
As an early engineer, you'll have significant influence over architecture, engineering practices, and product direction. You'll collaborate closely with founders, product engineers, and the applied AI team to translate complex product requirements into scalable and reliable systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and operate reliable backend services and APIs
- Own technical projects from initial architecture through production deployment and ongoing operation
- Build systems that process high volumes of events, experiments, and customer data
- Improve interoperability, reliability, performance, observability, and scalability of the platform
- Make thoughtful architectural decisions balancing speed, simplicity, and long-term maintainability
- Work closely with product and customer-facing teams to translate real-world needs into reusable platform capabilities
- Help establish engineering standards and shape the technical foundation of the company
The role is based in the San Francisco office with five days per week in-person work.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of experience building and operating backend systems in production
- Comfort working in a fast-moving environment with evolving requirements and limited structure
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience designing distributed or data-intensive systems
- Proficiency in Python or another modern backend language
- Experience building APIs, services, databases, and asynchronous workflows
- Track record of owning meaningful technical projects from conception through production
- Strong judgment around system design, reliability, and technical tradeoffs
- Clear communication and collaborative approach to solving problems
- Builder mindset—move quickly, care deeply about quality, energized by creating from the ground up
- Experience at an early-stage or high-growth startup
- Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Kafka, and Postgres
- Familiarity with evaluation systems, observability, orchestration, or distributed task execution
- Experience working on systems where correctness, latency, and reliability directly affect customer experience
