Rocket Lab is seeking a HITL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Software Engineer based in Auckland, New Zealand to design, maintain, and operate HITL systems that support the company's Production, Electron, and Neutron organisations.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing tools and automation solutions to optimize and streamline HITL system operations. You will work within a small team dedicated to designing, operating, and maintaining avionic test systems that support all of Rocket Lab's missions from the production floor to launch operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Contributing directly to the development of automation tools to optimize running HITL operations
- Working with other teams to verify the functionality and performance of Rocket Lab avionic components
- Operating launch vehicle simulation platforms for Day of Launch operations for specific missions
- Working hands-on with test and flight space hardware
- Ensuring HITL systems are subjected to appropriate levels of engineering rigor and documentation
- Creating and maintaining accurate technical documentation via system diagrams, schematics, ICDs, procedures, and test/anomaly reports
- Analyzing test results from raw data for pass/fail criteria
- Troubleshooting root causes from anomalies and communicating results and paths forward with internal teams, vendors, and customers
- Working with the New Zealand HITL team to improve HITL standardization processes and automation
You will support critical space missions and work under pressure with tight deadlines, requiring strong project management and delivery capabilities.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Science
- 4+ years working in a relevant engineering position
- 2+ years developing in Python on Linux
- Experience designing and architecting automation solutions
- Experience working in a Hardware-in-the-loop environment
- Exposure to designing and implementing test systems for Hardware-in-the-loop environments
- Understanding of sensors, signal conditioning, and data acquisition electronics
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
- Proven track record of managing projects and delivering on time, on cost, and on quality
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong working relationships
NICE-TO-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Science
- Ability to understand and create technical documentation via system diagrams, schematics, ICDs, procedures, and test/anomaly reports
- Strong troubleshooting skills and aptitude for technical guidance and mentoring of junior engineers
- Mindset of actively "make and break" to find flaws and issues and report them
