Impulse Space is seeking a Staff Turbomachinery Engineer to design, analyze, build, and test high-performance turbomachinery for advanced liquid rocket engines. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will own the turbomachinery design and development process from concept through flight qualification.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design turbomachinery components for high-performance liquid rocket engines, including inducers, stators, impellers, turbine rotors, and stators
- Perform 1-D sizing and detailed flowpath design for pump and turbine stages
- Design secondary fluid flowpaths for bearings, seals, and coolant systems
- Conduct detailed structural and thermal analysis of turbomachinery components using FEA and CFD tools
- Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and test teams to ensure hardware is manufacturable, cost-effective, and meets reliability requirements
- Support turbopump manufacturing, assembly, and testing campaigns
- Apply deep knowledge of turbomachinery design practices, rotor dynamics, balancing, and assembly procedures
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or science
- 7+ years of relevant turbomachinery design and analysis experience
- Strong fundamentals in fluids, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanics, and materials
- Proficiency with fluids and structural analysis software (CFD, FEA)
- Hands-on CAD experience for hardware design
- Knowledge of turbopump assembly, rotor balancing, interference fits, and clearance management
- Demonstrated ability to take project ownership and thrive in small, fast-paced teams
