Intuit is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Traffic platform team, which owns the API Gateway and Service Mesh infrastructure handling all North-South and East-West traffic across Intuit's digital ecosystem serving ~100 million customers. This is a high-impact role on critical infrastructure with direct blast radius across all consumer-facing and internal services.
You will provide technical leadership across the Traffic platform with particular focus on two major initiatives: the MCP Gateway (authentication and routing layer enabling AI agents like Claude to securely interact with Intuit services) and AI-agent-driven traffic operations (agent-assisted troubleshooting, config impact analysis, automated service onboarding).
Key responsibilities include: setting architecture and engineering direction for API Gateway, Service Mesh, and MCP Gateway; designing and hardening the MCP Gateway including authentication flows for AI agent clients; leading AI-agent-enabled traffic operations work; owning major migrations (Envoy adoption, Java-to-Go transitions, ICGW/3X consolidation) end-to-end with attention to backward compatibility; applying and evolving resiliency practices (FMEA, Game Day exercises, load shedding) to reduce P1/P2 incidents; serving as technical escalation point during high-severity incidents; partnering cross-functionally with Principal Engineers and managers; mentoring senior and staff-track engineers; and contributing to roadmap planning with grounded technical input on scope, sequencing, and risk trade-offs.
Required qualifications: 8+ years software engineering experience with significant time operating large-scale, low-latency distributed systems in production; deep hands-on expertise with Envoy and/or Istio or equivalent service mesh/API gateway architectures; strong systems-level programming in Go and/or Java with experience migrating hybrid-language platforms at scale; demonstrated experience designing authentication/authorization systems for high-throughput, security-sensitive traffic; track record leading incident response and root-cause analysis for P1-level production issues with broad organizational impact; experience with AWS networking and infrastructure; proven ability to operate as technical leader without direct reports.
Preferred: direct experience building/operating infrastructure for AI agent traffic (MCP, LLM gateway patterns); eBPF-based traffic capture or observability tooling; WASM or Go-based Envoy extension development; FMEA methodology, chaos engineering, or Game Day resiliency practices; experience on platform teams with systems on critical path for downstream teams.
