As a Staff Software Engineer on the Time and Scheduling product team, you will operate across the full product lifecycle—from early specification and design through launch and long-term iteration. You'll write clean frontend code, design and build reliable backend APIs, influence product direction, and own outcomes after features ship.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and test Gusto core products across the Time domain
- Mentor other engineers on solving complex technical problems at scale
- Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications in the world
- Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points and prototype, iterate, and launch solutions
- Build products that customers genuinely love
You bring 8+ years of software development experience with a track record of building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain and create memorable experiences. You have hands-on experience leveraging AI tools and systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new capabilities. You're curious about emerging AI frameworks and can apply and share best practices for safe, scaled AI adoption across teams.
You've owned multi-quarter projects solving complex engineering problems with measurable customer impact at scale. You have experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability optimization, and strong ownership over all aspects of your product area. You can mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact.
Preferred qualifications include experience with Ruby on Rails, appreciation for collaborative test-driven development, ability to write well-structured maintainable code, and effective communication across engineering teams and business stakeholders.
Gusto has offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York. Hybrid employees in those locations are expected to work from the office 2-3 days per week. Travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required.
