Temporal is an open-source programming model that simplifies code, improves application reliability, and helps developers focus on delivering features faster. The company is building the reliable foundation for every developer's toolbox. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Test Systems & Tooling team, you will lead technical initiatives to make sophisticated system-level testing practical across the engineering organization. You'll design and build platforms that enable teams to validate changes under production-like conditions and realistic failure modes before they reach production. Key responsibilities include: • Design and evolve tooling for production-like test environments that resemble production topology, configuration, and behavior, partnering with Cloud/Infrastructure teams. • Build capabilities for workload generation, multi-tenant testing, stress/load testing, and traffic replay systems to reproduce production behaviors in controlled environments. • Create tooling for injecting and validating failure conditions (latency, dependency faults, resource exhaustion, degraded-state recovery, region-level failures) to enable deliberate failure-mode testing. • Identify high-impact system-level scenarios that are difficult to test and implement repeatable coverage incorporated into continuous and release validation. • Provide opinionated libraries, harnesses, and patterns that enable product teams to write high-quality system and integration tests consistently. • Mentor engineers and influence testing strategy across the organization through design docs, code reviews, and cross-team collaboration. • Partner with Reliability and Release Engineering to turn incident learnings into durable pre-production test coverage and integrate validations into the release pipeline. You bring strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building and operating production-quality systems (platforms, infrastructure, developer tooling, or distributed systems). You have demonstrated technical leadership in leading ambiguous, cross-team initiatives, driving alignment, and delivering durable systems. You design for observability, debuggability, and operational readiness. You communicate effectively across organizational boundaries and have strong written communication skills. Nice-to-have experience includes chaos engineering, fault injection, workload replay/shadowing, performance testing, multi-tenant test strategy, building internal platforms used broadly across engineering organizations, and measuring engineering/system outcomes.
