Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Tax Credits product initiative, an emerging app designed to help small business owners discover and leverage available tax credits and grants. This is a high-impact, cross-functional role where you'll design, build, and scale solutions that solve complex problems in the tax and compliance domain.
You will mentor other engineers on the team, helping them tackle some of the hardest technical challenges at scale. The role involves working with Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React—two of the largest applications in the world—while collaborating closely with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points and deliver solutions that customers genuinely love.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, building, and testing core Gusto products focused on tax credit discovery and self-serve experiences
- Mentoring engineers to maximize their performance and impact on complex technical problems
- Owning multi-quarter projects that solve engineering challenges and deliver measurable customer impact at scale
- Collaborating cross-functionally to prototype, iterate, and launch features daily
- Leveraging AI tools and systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new capabilities
- Driving large-scale refactors and addressing performance and reliability issues
The Tax Credits team is horizontal in nature, working across multiple product teams and business goals. The team has strong executive support and exciting plans to grow in size and scope. You'll be responsible for creating "magical just-in-time moments" that introduce tax credits to the right customers at the right time, and building a simplified, streamlined discovery journey.
Gusto supports over 500,000 small businesses nationwide and is building a workplace that reflects the people they serve. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs). A two-day office visit for onboarding is required.
